now i know...but still...you guys sure just replacing the gasket would fix the problem? would it blow again soon because of the dp? or just get a turbo manifold so i won't have to worry about this problem again

Thats why I went with HKS no problems at all.Best of luck to you, if your unable to do it yourself maybe you can get together with some of your fellow Evo owners in your area that can help you do it.

What makes you so sure it's the manifold gasket? I would check the downpipe before anything else, and don't listen to mechanics at shops they are more likely to be wrong than right about Evos I've found...

It's oil blowing up on the hood? There is a gasket proplem that needs to be solved right away.

The hood vent creates low pressure and pulls the air out of the engine bay. It wouldn't matter where it was coming from it would end up there.

Well then he's an idiot because he should have been using a sniffer...even more of a reason not to listen to dumbass mechanics. You think smart people end up at Joe Blow's Muffler Shop on the corner? If there is anything in life I've learned, someone can do one thing all day every day and still be absolutely no good at what they do...and to make it worse, they THINK they are good because they have been doing it for so long...

I just told you check the gasket between your O2 housing and downpipe...you DO have a gasket there don't you? I find it hard to believe your exhaust manifold gasket went bad considering it's made out of metal and you didn't mess with it...or DID You?

EDIT: To me it looks like your O2 housing-to-downpipe gasket is leaking, and the smoke is being pulled up through the center hole in your exhaust manifold up and out of the hood.

oh yeh, i forgot to tell you guys....i bought a new gasket (donut thing) from mitsu dealership between the o2 and the dp...thought that was it causing the problem, but after today replacing the old with the new gasket bwteen the dp and the o2, the smell still didn't go away....when stepping on the gas in neutual, gas smell coming from vent....so still didn't fix the problem...at least the new gasket didn't make a diff...

Well here's a thought...put your stock one back on with another new gasket...it's not a hard job, 4 nuts/bolts to deal with, and it sounds like you are in good practice. If it's still leaking, THEN look at the exhaust manifold. It really doesn't make sense that the exhaust manifold would be leaking.
