normal tranny noises?<--new IX owner

Hey Everyone,

I posted this question in the newbie section and didn't get much of a response, so I'm hoping this forum will.

I picked up my IX a couple of days ago(got rid of my 06 STI) and am enjoying the car very much. One main concern I have is that there seems to be excessive drivetrain noise (mainly the gears and maybe tc?). I have the normal AWD noise, but there's a slightly muted supercharger whine type of noise in 1st-4th. It's only there when the car is in gear and it changes with speed. The car had 19 miles on it when I picked it up, but I doubt much damage could have been done. I've owned 2 wrx's and an STI in the past and never had this much gear noise.

Is this just normal? Almost sounds like straight cut gears (maybe not as loud).
I also get the crunching in shifts from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, but I'm hoping that changing the gear oil and putting more miles on the car will alleviate that issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

James

It sounds like you have too much noise to be normal. If you can find someone else with an evo that you can ride in to compare that would be the best idea. If not, you might want to let the dealer look at it before you change the gear oil. You dont want them to think you caused the noise by changing the oil.

sounds normal, they are very noisy drivetrains, whinining while accelerating in first and second gear, decel noise, throw-out bearing noise in neutral with foot off the clutch, and syncro grinding...

put some miles on it and change the tranny fluid for pennzoil syncromesh, it will become butter smooth.. i also changed my tcase fluid with diaqueen at 7k and again at 13k miles....still have that take off first gear whine, and some decel noise, its normal.

I think it's pretty normal.

Since your car is new, the gears and drivetrains have to be broken in also.
I'd say if the gear is still grinding after about 1k miles I would have it checked out or adjust the clutch pedal.

I know there are already threads about this, but:

What made you decide to switch? any regrets?

my simple philosophy on the STI vs. EVO debacle:
-if u are going to keep it stock, cherish your warranty, and want a non peaky nice fast all weather comfortable car, buy a STI.

-if u are going to mod and want to participate in any form of motorsports whether it be dragracing/autocross/road race etc, AND have a nice fast all weather car, and you happen to have a set of nuts, buy an EVO.

I also just got a IX and I have the same sounds as you. There is a slight whine as you describe and also not a grind but kind of resistance going into 2nd and 3rd. My second seems to be getting a little smoother and I noticed that if you use very little force while shifting into 3rd, it feels smoother.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about

i have 5k on my IX and not a single out of the ordinary sound coming from anywhere including the drivetrain. Maybe i,m just lucky but the samething on my 03 8, no out of the ordinary sounds until i put in the excedy twin and then i got the decel noise but that was it.So far so good(make that great) with the BR350 IX #005

if it was me and the car was new with no mods i would take it to the dealer if i was him and have everything checked out after a test drive with the service manager in the car so he can here and feel what i was and if he said everything was ok and normal i would get it in writing which would be on the service reciept anyway and just go on driving and enjoying the car!
