Thumbs down Pennzoil Syncromesh

This stuff sucks. It doesn't last very long at all. Although the tranny is buttery smooth when you put in new fluid, it starts getting very notchy and sticky even just at 3k miles. At 4k miles on the same fluid, the tranny is almost unbearable to drive.

I had the OEM tranny fluid in for 12k miles and not a hint of grinding and notchiness. I decided to drain it out and put in Syncromesh due to the good reviews on here. I now have 23k on the car and am about to change the syncromesh for the 3rd time.

What other fluid can I use that is readily available at local stores, won't destroy the tranny and lasts longer than 3k miles?

I don't know about available at local stores, but I'm currently using Amsoil fully synthetic GL-4 tranny oil. I just ordered a case that will get me 4 fluid changes. I've had it in for ~9000 miles and it still shifts very nicely.

Nothings wrong with the stock fluids. Changing them out (oil, trans, whatever) is a waste of perfectly good oil and an invitation for the dealer to potentially void a warranty claim.

This post paid for my proponents of stock paper air filters, stock Mobil 1 oil and stock transmission fluids.

I used Penzoil and had the same problem. I would just swap it out when I did my oild changes. I am using the BG II now and its great. It has been 6k miles now with no problems at all. You might be able to find it locally. I think the website is bgfindashop.com or something like that to see if there is one close that sells BG products.

Yeah, it lasted like 2k only when I first changed it. So, I changed again after 2k. So far, no problems with the synchromesh. I think it has to be completely flushed when you change the fluid. my stock OEM fluid lasted only 1.5k and started grinding. so.... I still think synchromesh is better.

If it is not a long lasting synthetic you will need to do that, swap it out every oil change. BGII has gotten a lot of good feedback. OEM is synthetic as is the BGII and the Royal Purple I was using. Make sure it says synthetic if you want it to last.

yeah the Pennzoil doesn't last that long but it's easy to change and cheap, and while it's working it works much better than the stock fluids.

Redline cocktail (mt-90 and MTL)... First time I had it done, I went for 10K miles(no track day). Such a big difference from stock fluids.
Right now I have at least 5K miles and 1 track day, and still shifts great.

I had positive experience with Pennzoil Syncromesh for 13,000 miles of moderate to hard driving with no issues. Certainly much better than the factory fill fluids that were in there, but it could also be attributed to the gearbox still breaking and wearing in at the time.

Out of curiousity I recently switched from Pennzoil Syncromesh to straight Redline MTL, no mixture of MT90/MTL, just straight MTL and the result has been very positive. So far is feels and shifts better than it ever has.

I have 10k miles on the penzoil I put in there and it still shifts great. Actually, at the beginning, it was really good then it got a little worse but then for some reason it started feeling more like when it was new again. This was about 5k ago and its been great ever since.
