Track...

Went to the track again last night. Probably shouldn't have. Went there to see some friends run (dispute over who had the faster all motor Civic). Was gonna be there anyway, and it was only $8 more to run the car then to just be a spectator, so I ran the Evo. Camcorder battery died after filming my 1st run. Got used up taking pictures at the NY auto show earlier.

Here's a clip of my 1st run Wednesday night.
Need more power

Thanks everybody

Here's my list of mods..

Hallman boost controller (20psi)
2.5" test pipe (with stock downpipe/stock exhaust)
K&N filter
Greddy BOV
SAFC2

Times for that run on the video...
60' 1.842
330' 5.313
1/8 8.209
MPH 84.23
1000 10.731
1/4 12.860
MPH 106.00

Best 60' of the night was only 1.822, which netted a 12.768 @ 104.83mph (best run of the night too). No clue why MPH was low on that one.

Best MPH of the night was 106.82MPH, but it ran a 13.17, spinning all 4 tires on the launch. So violent to the point I had to back off throttle then reapply. 2.071 60' on that one.

Other runs of the night were the 12.860 @ 106.00MPH in the video clip, and a 12.853 @ 105.00MPH.

106.82MPH was the highest I've ever gotten in this car in the 1/4. Went to the track staright from the NY auto show, with a bunch of **** in the trunk, and a hair over 1/2 tank of gas. Car weighed in at 3416lbs, with me (150lbs) in it, so it wasn't a lightweight that night.

It was much cooler (temperature) out this week than last, so I launched about 500rpm lower (5500, as for last week's 6K), but it still blazed tires. Dumping the clutch out at 5500rpms will chirp the tires than bog a little. Slipping the clutch out fast (I really don't suggest doing it unless you really know what you're doing) seems to be the best way to launch. It will spin tires a little, but once it hooks, you're out

The yellow car is a newer bodystyle Mustang GT. I don't think he expected me. On that run, he ran 14.301 @ 96.98MPH.

Probably knock retard. You don't generally get knock retard until 3rd and 4th gear. So you will see a mph in the 1/8th that is great, but your mph in the 1/4 isn't so hot. However, 90% of what determines a good E/T is what happens before the 1/8th mi marker, so you can still get a good E/T.

Knock retard isn't as bad as it seems, unless the ECU can't take out enough timing to make the knock stop.

ShapeGSX, you were right about the knock retard. I went to dyno the Evo yesterday (had no plans in dynoing yesterday, but a friend wanted to see an AWD dyno in action, so I went). On the dyno, on the first 2 pulls, you can clearly see where there was knock and detonation. It was at the higher rpms, a little before 6K, until a little after 6K. On the HP and TQ graph on the dyno chart, there were actually breaks in the line, which shows the car pulling back timing. It eventually picks back up. On the dyno, when the line breaks on the graphs, you can actually feel the car fade away then come back in. The car ran a little lean there (a/f graph from wideband O2 had a little spike). After richening it up there, and a little across the board, the graph smoothed out, and I gained 13 peak whp (after the 3rd and final pull of the day). Car feels a lot cleaner now. The a/f ratio is a little bit more conservative. It actually feels better upstairs too.

Today is Wednesday. Trying to make it to Englishtown tonight. Hopefully the ETs drop and the MPH goes up. There SHOULD be a difference in the MPH. Hopefully it's a lot

If you buy a datalogger (www.pocketlogger.com is my favorite OBDII datalogger), you can see those timing pull-backs. I don't make a drag strip pass without a datalogger.

Were you running on pump gas or race gas, btw?

I am going to look into that datalogger thing.

I ended up running a somewhat conservative 11.3 to 11.7 a/f.
They told me on the dyno that if I run a straight 11.7 all the way across, it ends up being 12.0 to 1 or so on the street, which is kinda on the limit with pump gas. I don't want to risk more detonation, making the knock retard kick in. I'm thinking I'll end up losing more power that way. From the graphs, it looks like 11.7 is where the car is happiest. Being that I drive the car on the street, and run pump gas, I tuned on 93.

Maybe some time in the future I'll try open exhaust, race gas and all that good stuff.

BTW, a stock EVO runs disgustingly ruch at high rpms. Past 6500rpms, it's richer than 10:1 a/f, which falls off the edge of the graph (rich)
