Need Help - AEM Ignition box bad?
Need Help - AEM Ignition box bad?
Hi Guys,
I am in need of a little bit of help. Here is some background:
Running AEM EMS, and coil-on-plug system running off of an old-style AEM ignition box. I was told that this box would inevitably die on me with no warning, and I think that may have happened.
I was drag racing on Friday. Made about 8 passes, then drove the car back to the pits. Car ran fine, no problems. About 3 hours later I hooked up the laptop to upload my pump gas map to the EMS. After uploading program I started the car and almost immediately it started idling really rough, sounded like it wasn't firing on all cylinders, and then it stalled. I could not get it started again. I thought maybe there pump gas map was corrupted (can that happen?) so I re-uploaded the race gas map. Car started up and idled normally. When we were getting ready to pull out of the parking lot the car died again and would not restart. I took off the COP system, disconnected the AEM box, and put the stock coils and wires on. I did not change anything else in the EMS.
On the way home I noticed that when I would come up to a light and clutch in, the revs would hang at 2000 rpms and the AFR's would go off the scale lean. It would never fall below 2000 rpms unless I shifted to higher gear and let the clutch out and force the rpms down by bogging it. Then it would idle normally at 14.7:1 at the appropriate rpm. I checked the plugs and they appear normal.
Questions:
1 - Who has had the old AEM ignition box die? What were the symptoms?
2 - Is there a way I can test the AEM box to see if it is in fact not working properly?
3 - Do I need to change any setting in the EMS to make it work properly with the stock coils vs. the COP setup?
4 - Any advice on what else might be wrong? Any other areas I should check?
Thanks for any advice you can give!! I need to get the car up and running strong again for a big race this weekend.
