Can someone answer a rear diff question for me??

Ive been hearing some noise in the rear and put the car on the hoist. With it running in first gear, i could stop either tire in the rear. I thought most LSD's would always spin both tires??? I could stop either side......

Not necessarily true.
It depends on the design of the LSD.

when i turn one wheel in the rear, the other turns the opposite direstion. When i grab and turn the drive line, they both turn forward together........

Thanks for the post Ray.
I noticed metal clunking sound, esp slow sharp turn eg:in parking lot, driving into the drive way, but not on high speed turns(maybe i am not hearing it due to road noise).
So, i took it to Ray here in Tucson, evo guru in tucson, and noticed above findings. car on lifters, in first gear, both real whees are turning forward and dont' ask me how but Ray stopped one side of rear wheel but opposite wheel still spins in forward.
is this normal with LSD in rear in 03 evos?

Ray...it's there...it's not coming from my mind...

I had exactly that when my Evo was brand new. The rear diff was low on oil. I tossed some Mobile1 75-90 gear oil in there and it went away.

Well, it's not likely to be the front diff is low since it's inside the trans. Also, it's not a clutch pack. The rear knocks when it's low because of the high friction between the clutches. With out oil on them, as you turn they grab hard until there is enough torque to over power them then pop as they release and grab again.

If your front diff is knocking, it's damaged.

I agree with Timcatz. That may be normal behavior. I have seen other LSD on Hondas do this when on a rack and the tires spinning (motor on) and stopping one wheel, the other still spun. I have never done it with my Evo though.

I might put my Evo on the lift and see if it does it. His diff seems to have alot of play also. I can rotate the driveline about an inch before either wheel moves......
