EGT Guage/Probe

Just got my Autometer boost and EGT guages the other day and I am getting ready to tackle the install. Certainly looks easier then the install on my WRX. My question is where to install the probe for the most accurate readings? With the WRX there was a certain cylinder to read because it tended to get hotter then the other three. Is there anything like that on the EVO? If anyone has a picture of an install that would be great.

Thanks!

Mike

Thanks but unfortunately that doesn't address the probe location issue.

Anyone...Claudius?....Bueller?

Thanks,
Mike

It should be about 1.5" or so from the exhaust port of the head; in the exhaust manifold on the cylinder closest to the driver side of the car. It gets fuel last and therefore most likely to be lean/hot. You'll have to pull the manifold to do it properly.

You should tap the #1 runner (last on the fuel rail), and it is possible to drill with the engine on, but you have to be careful, so as not to damage the turbo. Here are some instructions for the DSM install off the vfaq, and the procedure should be very similar on the Evo: http://www.myzero.com/gauges/egt.html

www.vfaq.com is starting to add Evo-specific stuff, and much of what is there already applies to the Evo, so it's definitely worth checking out.

I'm not sure where the #1 runner is on the EVO as the engine is set 180 degrees from the 1G,2G and 3G DSM's. Also, it uses a dual exhaust manifold and I think the 1 and 4 runners are far left and right looking at the windshield, but would need a drawing to confirm it.

True, I don't know which one is the #1 on the Evo , but you want to tap whatever's on the tail end of the fuel line, as that cylinder will be leanest.

The tail end of the fuel rail is on the drivers side.

On second thought, that might not be so. The pressure regulator is on the passenger side of the fuel rail. Does the return or the feed attach to the FPR?
