Yo, I'm new to the forum. however i don't even have an evo yet. i've been keeping an eye on the forum for a few months just taking in the knowledge and insight from everyone. But i cant find anything that discusses the tranny and if people prefer 5 speed or a 6 speed. overall, how do they compare towards one another? i know there was some note somewhere of 6 gear being useless... but i see it as a highway gear considering the fact that my father owns a corvette and only uses 6th on the highway. what are their pros and cons?

chris.

You want the 5 speed for drag racing.

The 6 speed would be good if for road racing/autocrossing.

Also people say the 6speed is more fragile.

I have been told that the 5 is stronger than the 6 and that if something goes wrong, the 5 is cheaper to fix than the 6 is too.

TKmotorsports is wrong, 5 speed is excellent for drag racing, and 5 speed is ALSO better than 6 speed for autocrossing. 6 speed is more fragile but 6 speed is great for highway

6 speed is good for hwy and yield better gas milage too! 5 speed is stronger and cheaper to replace.

mileage is worse in the MR (according to Mitsu):

For what I use them for here on Guam. Our autoX courses here are relatively small (40-60 sec. runs) the 5 speed is better. My brother drives an STI and he always has to shift to 3rd gear just briefly in some straights. I am always on 2nd gear because of the wider spaced ratios.

I can't see how this could possibly be true...

6 speed shifts smoother plus a taller top gear. I would immagine better on a track with more ratio's.

The 6 speed is only slightly better than the 5 speed in road or track use, because it allows for the driver to stay in the "sweet spot" of the powerband and apply that power just a few more times/lap than one could on the 5 speed. We've all read those articles --- those laps always ended with the RS in the lead (lower weight 5-speed), followed by the MR, and then the GSR. So given almost equal weights, 6 speeds win in the head to head.

The 5 speed is always going to be better in acceleration tests since it allows for one less shift to achieve a desired speed (although 4th is about it for a drag race), and is ultimately cheaper to replace --- but is that a selling point for a daily driven car? Probably not.

The differences again, are minute, but differences none the less can make a win/loss depending on environment.

MRs are heavier. Weight wise its RS<GSR<MR.

Hope this works - what the EPA tested:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm

Well, if not play around on it. They have the same MPG for a 2005 GSR and MR listed. However, 6 sp. users MPG rated 22.5, 5 sp. users MPG rated 21.4.

It all comes down to what you like. Me - I like 4 spds actually. But 5 works for my driving/racing.

5 speed all the way if you are drag racing, with a 6 speed you are always shifting

im not sure but i would think that almost all professional race evos have 5 speeds. That i know of. but i always wish i had a 6th gear for highway...

i have no idea how the MR could get worse HIGHWAY MPG...

i love my 5 speed but long trips cruisin on the freeway gets old in 5th and sometimes i accidently reach down to shift but then i remember i only have 5 gears woudlnt wanna trade it for 6 speed but sometimes it would be nice.
