Yeah I have a friend with 400whp in a 6speed and two transmission repairs so far in an EVO IX MR

 

The 6 speed cannot withstand the temps hardcore open-track drivers create:

 

I would think that if you were hard core road racing your Evo, an aftermarket tanny cooler may be in order. ARC makes a Fantastic one. WARTALON is also having his tranny rebuilt, he busted 4th in his 6 speed. Change your gear oil often, invest in a Gear oil temp gauge, heat kills these things you know.


FWIW the 5 speed has to be stronger as there are less parts in the same gear box, I would immagine certain gears are a lil thicker since there is extra room.

That gear above looks like only half the gear (lower half) grabs before it settles, probably stripping it. If it were thicker it would have more to grap on.

Plus I hear the 5 speed has a higher top speed. I read like 163 is for the 6 and 167 for the 5
