6 spd MR tranny weaker than 5 spd?

Nissan s15 six speed trannies are known to be weaker than 5 speeds in s13 and s14's.....so I figured Id see what you guys had to say about the MR's gearbox.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing..

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=210221

The 6 speed is more prone to overheating on road courses (25 minute + sessions). The fluid to heats up, stops working and 4th gear is usually the first to go. It's not really an issue on a drag strip or on the street though, since it's very unlikely you'll heat the trans up nearly as much.

If you're going to track the car a lot, get the 5 speed.

Too bad the 6spd isn't a Getrag. It's made by Aisin.

3rd gear on up is very weak in the 6spd, here is 4th:

6spd:

1st = 19mm
2nd = 19mm
3rd = 16mm
4th = 14mm
5th = 14mm
6th = 14mm

5spd:

1st = 14mm
2nd = 17mm
3rd = 19mm
4th = 18mm
5th = 18mm

I wouldn't call 3rd in the 6spd beefy but it isn't as small as 4th +

Before I opened up the 6 speed transmission I hoped to find 3rd gear at least as wide as the 5 speed transmission considering the shaft spacing, but it wasn't and Jeez was I shocked by how narrow 4th-6th gear turned out to be.

Even with it's apparent weaknesses; the 6 speed should be able to hold up just fine for most of the people who left the car stock and only attack a freeway off ramp every now and then.... and I'm sure that when Mitsubishi approved the 6 speed they didn't think that us turbo crazed people would take the EVO as far as we did. At least they kept the 5 speed around.

I wish Mitsubishi made the 6speed like this...

1 through 4 is SAME as 5spd.
5th gear CLOSER to 4th (5spd guys know how crappy 5th is) and
6th gear for highway cruising and gas mileage. Man that would make me happy.

Technically, can you install 5spd gears in the 6spd tranny like that.. and get a custom 6th gear hehe

Wow VERY interested. Would you say 1st on the 5speed is weaker and the rest are fine?

Why doesn't someone come out with a custom gear set? I'm guessing cost but is it possible?
