If you want better gas mileage, fast ride, some comfort, little luxury, then spend 50,000. buy a corvette. for 30,000 this is what your going to get. unfortunatly so far for 30K you can get luxury or speed. the mits I feel is good enough at both ends.

Sorry, the owner's manual said 5000RPM like you said. I just kept under that because accelerating in the 3kRPM range starts spooling the turbo pretty good and I didn't want to go fast during the break in. I held the car back under 3500-4000RPM for the entire break-in period. Since I wasn't driving hard at all during break-in there was no need to go over 4000RPM.

wow, its suprising the evo gets such good gas mileage, cause i only get 20mpg out of my lancer and all i have is a cai, header and axle back exhaust. I do drive hard, but not all the time, although i do get a lot better on the freeway, like 30mpg.

The stock ecu runs way pig rich for safety and to prevent detonation(especially in the mid-high rpms). Look into getting an AFC or better ecu settings and youll probly see at least a marginal increase in gas milage.

check out the A/F ratios going rich off the chart here.

I've had 2 or 3 tanks where I got around 160-170 miles. On average, I fill it up after about 200. I know that I drive fairly hard, but I don't see how it's even POSSIBLE to get even remotely CLOSE to 280 miles with any mixed city driving on this car. You guys are testiments to self-control . When I bought this car, I mentally made a decision not to stress on gas mileage, and it's actually much more of a relief, ultimately. It's just nice to be able to have fun with your car whenever you want with a clear conscience and just spend the extra 50 bucks a month.

The car will only run pig rich when the ECU is in open-loop mode. This only happens at or near wide open throttle, or when there is a significant amount of airflow, or when you pass a certain RPM.

At all other times (closed loop mode), it runs lean. It uses the front O2 sensor to get feedback on how rich or lean the engine is running. Then it sets the injector pulsewidth accordingly. It uses feedback to keep the A;F ratio correct.

In general, on DSMs, the more you mod your car, the worse your city milage gets, but the better your highway milage gets. I used to get 22mpg city, 26 highway when I was stock. Now I get 18mpg city and I have gotten as high as 31.7mpg on the highway. Yes, with an AWD Eclipse.

My best gas mileage on the highway was a little over 25 mpg driving steadily at around 70-80 mph.... In the combined city/highway driving I do normally, I get about 18/19 mpg... This is not very good but there again I bought a high performance car and I don't expect great fuel economy.

My WRX got about 10% better gas mileage than the EVO, but it definitely suffered when I started modifying it. The Turbo-back exhaust alone caused a drop of about 5-10% in fuel economy and the addition of the UNICHIP worsened the situation somewhat too.

I would guess that a very conservative driver can probably squeeze 20+ mpg in combined city-highway and perhaps 30 mpg from highway trips but I doubt that it can get any better than that. Oh yeah, I have to say that when I did my highway trip, I also had my wife with me and the car was loaded with our luggage, etc. I suppose that if the car had only the driver, no luggage, optimal tire pressure and very careful driving, the fuel mileage could go up substantially.

My average mileage is around 22-24mpg.

At the VIR track event, I started to get fuel starvation in the corners...when I came in, went to the pump and put in 12.5gal, after going only 74 miles!!!

Yup...a whopping 5.92 MPG on the track!

Ya gotta pay to play!
