We used to use 50-trims back in the late 90s on Impreza 2.5RS turbo kits (Before the WRX came out). For our performance goals, they were the best of the old T-series turbos. And they were also very inexpensive ($400-500). The GT series turbos, back then, weren't available since HKS had some sort of proprietary deal with Garrett Japan.

Some more pics I found of the DBB Garrett 50 Trim
Need a T-series that packs a huge punch. Look no further. Dual ball bearing Garrett T3/T4E, T04E 50 trim compressor with 3" inlet and 2" outlet. Stage III turbine wheel with T31 4 bolt. T3/4 drain flange. Coolant in/out required (14mm threads - same as GT series ball bearing). Great 450HP turbo. Available A/R, .48, .63, .82

On a daily driver I would say the differences would be minimal. However, the GT30 has a lot more to offer and can take a lot of boost. (Well actually takes a lot of boost to get moving). The GT30 on my sube would need 26-28 psi to hit the sweet spot.

It's said that the TO4 derives from "old" diesel technology, well actually it is a versatile unit, as it also saw duty at the Indianapolis 500 on 1200 hp Buick Indy car engines. I even had a John Meyer's modified TO4-E(called a TE-50) on my Buick Grand National and it was a great street/track turbo that was used on many 11 second street Buicks. On the Buicks it was good for up to about 575 all engine HP.
I could see how outfitted with a dual-ball bearing center section and one of Garrett or Turbonetics' 4" inlet compressor housings a TO4/T3 hybrid(50-Trim),would be a killer turbo on an Evo. I would prefer it to a 3071 myself and have no doubt that it would compare favorably to a properly configured GT 3076/3037 turbo.
It's good that there are so many choices when shopping for a turbo kit. I only wish that they were a bit less expensive. Maybe 'll have enough cash in hand the next time AMS has a group buy on the 50T kits. The 50-Trim users really do make a convincing argument for the "old" technology TO4/T3 and back it up with impressive dyno sheet proof...especially on pump gas.
