My evo 9 mr does the same thing in 2nd even though the clutch is pressed all the way down. It does so probably 1/6 of the time i go into 2nd gear. I noticed it a little after putting 600 miles on the car, took it to the dealer's shop and they quoted it as "gating" and is normal on some evo's for about the first 1k miles.

The car has about 2.4k miles on it and the problem isn't apparent anymore, but on the ocassion, I can't get into 1st gear. Pumping the clutch a few times solves the problem though....or so i think...

Ladies can we all just get along here. we are here to help out one another not call each other names like we're in kindergarden.
yes the tranny has syncros to help downshift. So no techinally you dont need to rev match. But obviously the stock synchros arent perfect as seen by how many people have had to replace them. So take everyones advice and apply it if you want if you dont then we well be seeing your thread on "My synchros are bad" here shortly

Actually I'm a computer engineer/mechanical engineer from University of Maryland (college park). I'm not trying to be to patronize you at all. You don't need to resort to name calling either, which is pretty pointless on an internet forum. Just google "rev matching" (use the quotes), and check out of the very first result you find, and it will clearly explain the many benefits of baby'ing your transmission.

I've also been having this problem ever since my break-in period was over...if I shift 2nd too fast at around redline it will grind every time ...so far the only things I've tried is adjusting my shifting slower, which helps when I'm thinking about it(I've had this same quick shifting technique w/ my previous 5 spds, honda subaru).... and just yesterday I tried to adjust the clutch pedal up to engage quicker but didn't help in the least. I guess I'm to the point where I want to know if the problem is me or my cars 2nd gear syncro, or clutch, or stock flywheel, or clutch restrictor line??

I wanted to bring this back up because there seems to be more people w/ the same problem and want to know how to fix it.

First I removed the clutch line restrictor made shifting quicker and at that same time I did a SS clutch line this gave me a much harder more responsive clutch pedal. I then changed tranny fluid pennzoil helped normal driving notchyness and difficulty getting the car into 5th and reverse, then did the front motor mount eliminated the high rpm grind completly, and while I was at it i did the under hood bushings made shifts more accurate. Thats on a 04 8

Try adjusting the shifter cable linkage.

This is interesting...seems to explain exactly what I think is happening to my quick 1-2 shift.

I'll have to look into this too

Then you'd go out and drive, stopping every once in a while to adjust the ends of the linkage at the shifter. Eventually, I got my car to not only shift smoother, but my second gear grind disappeared! Again, I haven't looked at the Evo linkage but I think that if it is similar to the DSMs, it may be worth a try.

Take care,

Nope that wasn't me, I drive a Silver Evo8 with an STIkiller.com rear license plate. Most of the time I drive a beat down green Toyota Paseo =)

Actually, it turns out there is no way to adjust the shifter linkage (to my knowledge) on the Evo...however there is a clip that you should check to see if it has excessive play:
