06 MR overboosting....

so our 06 MR seems to have issues controling boost. It has an ECUtek flash, that should be holding the boost 20-21 lbs, but that is not the case. Brought it back to the tuner thinking something went wrong with the map.....tuner decreased duty cycle on boost control solenoid, still overboosting just as hard with 50% duty cycle.

so we route vac lines around control solenoid....just running off actuator, and it holds boost right between .5 and 1.0 bar......say .7 bar.

so I figure boost control solenoid is bad, order up a new one from mitsu for 50 beans, and car is still boosting past 1.5 bar easily.

what could be causing my problems.....is it possible, or likely for the wastegate actuator to take a dump at just over 10k miles?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Greg

Good question!

I had the same problem when I first got my EcuteK. I used to spike 1.9bar but didnt really worry to much about it because I was running higher oct fuel than what my tune was designd for. After some time and some miles I now spike 1.7 and tapper to 1.5bar.

Its much warmer out latly so this could have an effect on boost spike.

What id like to know is, will a boost controller prevent boost spike?

Do wastegate actuators commonly go bad?

Used to have that problem in my old WRX with an MBC. Once I switched to ECUTEK, it was never a problem again. So I have no idea.

Aright went to KTR performance and sorted the issue. It was indeed in the map.....not boost control solenoid duty, but something else i.e. target boost pressure or some ****.

Anyways, car holds boost under 1.5 bar at this point, and Im happier than a pig in **** because of it.

Just curious, have you guys done any other mods to the car? TBE? Are you guys getting boost creep?

This sounds like it could be a failing wastegate actuator. Buy one of those $20 hand pump's (with gauge) from pepboys and test the actuator to see if it opens and closes at 10 psi.

Did you read?? He fixed it.

rhds13, I belive they had to change the "Boost desired engine load" but could be worng. Can you confirm??

I hope they didnt just alter the boost limit, as that will give you major erratic boost. What its doing at that point is trying to hit 1.9 but the ecu is rolling it back down. I would have them check the desired engine load table and the error correction. Those would most likely be your culprits like Evo_Kid said.

So the car is boosting pretty erractic it seems..... different really in every gear, 3rd gear is a bit down on boost......will spike at 1.5, go down to .9, creep up to 1.1. Do you guys hold pretty much the same amount of boost in each gear. Going to have to bring it back to KTR to get it sorted, as 3rd gear doesnt put a smile on my face anymore.

Any suggestions as to what needs tweaking in the map. I will try and find out tonight what was changed last time.

Heck, my completely stock 05 will hit 1.6 bar if it's even just slightly cool out (65-70) and it always hits 1.5 bar at least. I dunno... I don't worry about it, lol.

Im not worried cause i know its not overboosting. I would like the car to stop boosting so irregularly though, the needle sometimes dances around under boost.....literally.
