Need Advice on Ignition (Bad Misfire)

My car started acting funny about a month ago. When I would lug the car it felt like it was blowing out the spark until the rpms got higher. I just assumed that my ignition couldn't handle the extra power and boost, so I ignored it. It recently got worse, so I replaced the spark plugs thinking that would help, but it didn't.

Now my car will barely drive and it misfires like crazy under any kind of load.

My question is whether it is normal for coils to fail, or is this because the ignition cannot handle the extra power and I need to upgrade to the Buschur unit? The car has 65,000 miles on it, and if I can get away with just replacing the coils and wires, that woud be nice.

Also, do these symptoms sound like coils, or could it be something else? Thanks guys.

Dustin

I figured out what was wrong. I had a bad connection on the MAP sensor for the EMS, and at higher rpm's the vibration caused the connection to lose contact, making the car misfire. This means I will have brand new OEM plug wires and coils for sale.

what kind of plugs are you using dustin? Make sure you use strictly EVO approved plugs, ie bpr7es, ix, etc. Do you know anyone else with an evo around your area, switch coils if you have to. Good luck.

Actually, I am borrowing my friends IX MR to drive for the week, and I planned on trying those coils, but I called the dealer and they said they are different coils for the 06's. I don't know anyone else in my area with an evo.

are you logging your a/f ratio??? i notice you have a aem & if my af's get in the low 10's it starts to buck @ low rpm's just a thought just like misfire so i would check that also

^ I'll check it out, thanks. I'm pretty sure the a/f's aren't that low though, because I have an AEM serial gauge, and I've never noticed it being that low.

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
Check/change your spark plugs. What ones are you using (heat range)? Miles on them?

((and IX parts will not work on VIII (plugs or coils) - due to Mivec head))

One (or more) could be cracked and your spark is jumping before it should.

Its really easy to change plugs, and cheap. At 65k, if you never have - I would. I change mine about every 15k.

I replaced them today. BPR8ES. Still bad misfire. Do coils go bad over time, or do they just fail, because my car got progressively worse over the span of a month? I also did a compression test and it's perfect.

^ .024 in. I know something more substantial is wrong than just plugs because the problem wasn't fixed by new plugs. I just ordered 2 new coils and a set of OEM plug wires, so hopefully that will fix the problem.

I read that Magnacores suck on the evo. I went ahead and ordered oem wires. I'm hopin this takes care of the problem, I hate driving my friends IX.

Interresting article. Does this mean you're telling me I shouldn't re-use stock coils because of poor design? I guess I'll try the stock coils and wires, and if they don't work I'll have to come up with another plan. I'm really hoping that my problem is what I think it is.

no it's just sayin' you might consider it a maintenence item eventually... some people don't have problems but htere are a lot that have... might be more pronounced in racing conditions and hot areas with stop and go traffic where you get big engine bay temps.

the solution is the remove the coils from a high heat area... so a ways away from the engine is nice.
