Greddy Profec B users chime in

I just picked up a used unit from a member on board here. It has all the installation hardware ect.

I have a few questions that I hope the people who own this unit can answer.

How long have you used this EBC?

Have you experienced any problems with it?

The boost control solenoid is obviously used and I’m wondering if anyone has ever had to replace this unit and if you did where did you find it.

I chose this unit because of ease of installation and how easy it is to tune it. Currently I have a Forge MBC unit installed.

Can I use the current hoses that are installed and just replace the MBC with the boost control solenoid? I’ll be having a friend that can help me since he knows this kind of stuff, but wanted to know if that’s a correct assumption.

The instructions on tuning the unit show that there are some pins that are in the back of the unit. It doesn’t say what the correct configuration is for the 4G63. What is the correct configuration for the pins in back?

Thanks for the tips!

1. About a year on my previous car.

2. A solonoid is ither working or not.. If it isn't working worrie about replacing it. I'd say its working though and just go with it.

3.Yes. There will be instructions on the solonoid to hook up for an external gate and internal gate use the internal and you can use the mbc hoses.

4. I never touched any pins or saw any pins. I'm assuming if the previous owner of the unit had an evo it would be correctly setup or untouched i wouldn't go monkeying with this.

Sorry about not explaining it correctly.

There are 4 selector dip-switches in back used to select actuator type when over boosting occurs. The online instructions that I found from greddy just say to use them, but the instructions they give are pretty vague.

I always use settings for an internal gate, same settings used for an external with a single vac line to the side port. I have never had to use the overboost settings (used for cars that get extreme boost spikes, IIRC).

I used an old skool profec B on the GSX. Great boost controller! The cheddar knob always had enough range to dial out the spike without slowing spoolup too much. I also used the newer version (profec B type S or something) and that worked just as well, without any adjsutable options aside from the front knobs. I only used this one on an internal gate however.

One thing to note is that these EBCs can typically only double WGA spring pressure, or make the max boost the solenoid is rated for, whichever comes first. The old skool profec B solenoid could only do 26 psi (regardless of spring pressure, used up to 21 psi), the newer one was good for 43.5 though I never got a chance to test that over 25 psi or so.

Another point I liked on the profec was NPT ports for the solenoid. The HKS has plastic nipples molded into the body, no barbs or anything. I like the option of installing NPT to hose barb fittings in the correct size for whatever line I use (3/16th for internals typically, and reinforced 1/4" fuel injection hose for externals).

I wonder if it's possible to purchase the newer solenoid to use with the old school profec B.
