WARNING!! please read regarding transfercase oil!
i want to share what happened to my car regarding the transfer case oil!
i had my tranfer oil changed i made sure the level was correct it takes 0.6liters of oil to fill it up then 5000miles passed and i wanted to check the oil level and for my surprise it was low i dont have any oil leaks at all so i decided to change it again and i measured the transfer oil in use and it had 0.4liters so 0.2 liters just vanished to no where
!
my guess is that the oil evaporated cause my downpipe its very close to the transfer case so what i did for know is i wraped the pipe with a thermal heat wrap up and i hope this avoides the heat to the transfer case!
oil that i use is diaqueen and it was very black with just 5000miles of use!
i hope this helps to the evo comunity!

Check the drivetrain for oil. The slip yoke. Mitsu had a service bulletin a while back on the TC for the tail shaft seal, where the 1st drive shaft slides into it. Just look for some wet spots around there.
What the oil change done on the ground last time? Car could have been jacked up on the one side or front. Not letting it get filled completely?

Wow. I was unaware of that. Thank you for the info and I apologize for spreading incorrect info...
yeah there is a breather on the top but i highly doubt it just evaporated. When you removed the oil was the car warm? It could just be it did not all come out or you could have a bad seal.
i have done about 15 clutches and have seen this several times. Here is what i think. In order to do a clutch, you have to drain the x-fer case. (or you have a big mess) So when re-filling it, it gets an air bubble. You think its full, but it isnt. You drive for x amount of time and re-check it and its low. Its low because driving around, it burped itself and now its low. When i do clutches now, i drive the car for a few miles then re-fill the cases. Thats the way i see it.....It does not evaporate, leak ect. You just never filled it up enough!!! Ray

all in all I redid everything properly with new diaqueen
Yes indeed it helps to the Evo comunnity. I have a similar situation on my Evo 8 MR, the downpipe I am using (WORKS) is really close to the transfer case and I already have a big deep dent from when I installed first. I also replaced the fluid and it came black.
Your history makes a lot of sense to me. Also keep in mind that some Mitsubishi transfer cases like the 3000 GT VR4 are notorious from leaking from the main rear seal. I know that there might not be a direct correlation to the Evo but is something to keep in mind.

One more time, Jrsimon27 thanks for this great post

hmmmmm... I never rechecked mine after my clutch install almost 2k ago
I have noticed a whine when decellerating in 1st, figured it was my poly front mount I installed tranfering noise throught the car. I have only noticed it since the mount install.
Well I am at 5k know and all the fluids are getting changed again tommarrow.

It is helpful to measure the 0.6L of fluid BEFORE you put it in, so you know how much was put in to start with. Then, if you only get 0.4L out, you know what you're missing, and you have a reasonable base to compare to. Without that first step, you're just guessing the rest of the way...
I hope you guys are checking this on a flat level. Or the same position level of the car when you filled it.
I don't buy that the heat generated by the downpipe is cooking/evaporating the gear oil.
I think boiling point is around 400+ degrees for reg. gear oil. Synthetics are higher.

I would be more worried about coaking of the oil inside the transfer case than evaporating (which doesn't really happen in the true sense of the word for these types of oils). Since the transfer case is a closed system, the coaking would primarily happen around the hot areas near the exhaust (thus, on the inside of the case). Once it is baked on, it almost acts as an insulator, which may not be too bad. But more importantly, it prevents the viscous oil in the case from cooling off properly. The oil in the transfer case is cooled by the transfer case itself and the air moving around the outside of it. It may be a wise thing to either borescope the inside of the transfer case, or have it removed and cleaned.

first off all i did change my oil with my car being flat on a hydraulic elevator i used a recipient that has measures for liquids so i put on it 0.6liters 5000miles passed and i drained the oil on the same recipient and it had 0.4liters so it was missing 0.2liters and we have checked the car for leaks and it has nothing!
what i do see is that the bleeder for the ACD around it you can see like a black dry film of oil and its dry oil like it sweats, so this is why my mitsu mecanic says that the oil must be evaporating cause of the downpipe being to close and we looked at the OEM downpipe and it has a metal heat shield!
i know the transfer case is a sealed unit but the unions to it i can see this dry oil that if i pass my finger over it it removes easily but i dont have any leaks whatsoever none!
