I am just curious since almost everyone on this board has this problem.

No rattles or buzzes in drivetrain or anywhere else so far. I am amazed. Knock on wood.

I agree with the 3 replies above. I have zero buzz/rattle while accelerating or decelerating. My transmission is very very smooth. I think there was a poll done on this issue?

I hear no weird buzzes. But the awd tranny is noisier than most other trannys I have heard....2wd and awd.

I think a lot of people are just paranoid. The Evo has very little soundproofing. You are going to hear lots of things that you would not hear in your normal car.....even if that other car happens to have an AWD Trans too.

So before worrying about your tranny too much, or accusing Mitsu of having troubled transmissions, I think we should wait till more than just one or two failures are reported here.....more than one or two that are NOT due to abuse that is. Because most of the claims of tranny failure come from individuals who admit to clutch dropping, or doing burn-outs.....or other abusive actions.

no problems so far... 350 miles and counting... the Evo isn't much louder then my roommates WRX or my friend's Z06, and it is certainly quieter then my fd.

My problem has been with me ever since i drove it off the lot. The Stealership would not even let me test drive any EVO first. The terrible decel grind I get is accompanied by a high pitched squeal or rattle that is not in accordance with engine speed or RPM.

I traded in my perfect WRX for a POS EVO, and what do I get from a big "Sorry, we can't do anything for you right now."

No offense Chimp, but I think mitsu has admitted to replacing five tranny so far, one of which is mine and I still have the decel grinding/buzzing. And I know for a fact that I have not abused the car. It's funny all the folks here are saying that the evo's they have or have ridden in don't have the issue that mitsubishi is telling us all the evo's have..... makes you wounder when you get one story from the factory and another from the owners.....

Where are you located? Have you had a chance to ride/drive a couple of other EVO's to compare? Isn't there a formal process you can take to force a review by Mistusbishi? I would not accept it if ruins your enjoyment of the car.

I think some owners may just be choosing to ignore the problem.
I know one thing for sure....when I drive my car aggresively, the last thing on my mind is the decel noise. It is tough to hear if your not paying attention.

Maybe some owners just haven't slowed down yet?

Either way...I'm taking my car in Thursday to show the service department the decel noise. I'm also going to attempt taking another EVO out for a test drive and checking that one. The dealer has at least 4 of them on the lot.

Mine isn't tough to hear at all when your tearing up the twisites is when it is at it's loudest due to keeping the revs up in the 4-6 range.

Offering Assistance

I'll kindly offer my assistance in picking up and driving your Evo around until the sound stops. I'll even drop it back off at your home.

These things take a while though so be patient. Maybe a year or three...

Just let me know when and where to pick it up.

I don't know about anyone else, but if they replaced the transmission and you still have the decel grinding/buzzing, that just screams out (to me anyway) that the transmission isn't the problem.

I'm not saying you don't have a problem... But based on your description, it seems that there's some possibility that Mitsubishi has replaced some perfectly good transmissions?
