Question is it the throw-out bearing?

i just had Buschur put a new clutch, pplate, line and shifter bushings in my 03' evo 1,500 miles ago. the other night on my way home from work, i go to down-shift into 4th so someone could pull into their driveway and the clutch went to the floor and stayed there. with the car running, it won't shift. turn the car off and you can shift it. i called buschur and they told me that it sounds like the retaining clip on the t.o.b. and that it will cost me $400 for them to fix it. does this sound right? or should they be a warranty thing?

i dont see how it can be done after only that many miles

most places warrant work based on days not mileage. The norm around here is 30 days usually on labor. good luck

If you can document the miles and prove a case they should do you a favor. Considering if you bought the clutch from them and they installed it as a shop they need to back the product.

Did you adjust the clutch at all? It is possible the TOB popped out from the Pressure plate. This would be an easier fix. Please keep us posted.

I would also advise looking into the inspection hole with a flash light, take off the slave cylinder (2-12mm bolts) and have a friend move the fork back and forth and see if you can see that the TOB is engaged and snapped into the pressure plate.

A retaining clip seems like a line but then again it is always hard to diagnose over the phone/internet.

Typically the lock ring for the TOB comes apart. You have to disassemble everything, remove the pressure plate and put the lock ring back together. I usually see this when the clutch is first installed (when I screw something up!!).

I am thinking that your clutch slave cylinder needs a bleeding. Top off the reservoir and have a friend help you bleed the slave, then determine if you need to take the trans out.

Well unless they jammed it together and the ring fell out of there you should be able to see if it is properly engaged through the inspection hole.

Now I know your shop would never screw anything up!

Well they say you never learn unless you make mistakes, although admitting to them makes a man. Hope to see you at some 07 miEVO meets!

Same thing I was thinking...only cause it's happened in my GS-T a couple of times!

i almost have the tranny out right now and the only reason i don't have it out is b/c i can't get the t.o.b. to release from the retainer. i had check all the fluids before i started to disasseble the car. all the fluids looked good. i did see a crap load of metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug for the transaxle.

So the TOB is engaged into the pressure plate properly? Why are you taking the trans out?

I have seen some odd cases where the TOB will not disengage from an Exedy clutch. This may be your problem. You may have to unbolt your pressure plate to seperate the unit.

i'm gonna give the tob 1 mroe shot at releasing, if that doesn't work, i'll take joe's advice and unbolt the P.P. . i've already ordered a new tob, retainer from mitsu. and fluids from AMSoil. if i don't have this thing figured out by fri, i'm gonna bite the bullet and take the car to a REAL transmission shop.
