If someone had a good motor, and just wanted to upgrade, they probably have one sitting around you could buy. good luck, and I will keep my eyes open for you.

I found an AMS 2.3L Stroker Kit, but do I need a short block or can I just rebuild mine with that kit. Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but I have very basic knowledge on car engines. And the SBR Stage 3 kit can be bought with different comp. ratios. If I went that route, what would be a good comp. ratio? Choices are 10.0:1, 9:1, 8.5:1, 8:1, and 7.5:1. They also have different bore sizes too. Ok I'm lost need more help!!!

Call them up, I am not that good either. You just pull off the head, clean it, and put the head back on the motor you get. MUST change the oil pump also, maybe the water pump. You can call Eric at AMS, or Jarrod at Buschur, they will help you out. check THE REPUTATION before you jump into anything that might be problematic for you down the road. do your research!! And by all means, KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!!

Wow, way to jump the gun guys.

He never even stated if it only does it while driving or if sitting and reving.

If you are sitting still and it doesnt do it there is no way it is rod knock. If it is anything internal in the engine it will do it at all times.

It sounds to me like something drivetrain related. Rod knock that loud wouldnt even allow the engine to run. He would have a nice window in the block.

EDIT: Nevermind. I didnt see this line in the first post. Oops.

At a stop it sounds like someone knocking on metal but very quietly.

Either way though, have it properly diagnosed before you jump to conclusions.

Oh god!! It is sounding EXACTLY how mine did it, when I spun my bearing. read my link above, I won't go into explaining it again. it DIDN'T do it at idle. I heard it slightly at idle, and would sound like something was getting stuck in the radiator fan the more gas you gave it! TRUE, he has to make sure it is this, and it is always tough to diagnose something over the internet. MY CAR DID THE SAME THING when I spun my rod bearing, so I speak from expierence. How many rod bearings have YOU spun in an evo?? We are not jumping the gun here bro.

Edit: Just read your edit! You are right, get the proper diagnosis FIRST! disregard my defensive stance above

so get it checked out by ams or a local shop that works on imports/evos. go from there. if he says it sounds pretty bad and its an 03 (more chance of being used and driven etc) it may not be jumping the gun after all

I had a dodge 440 mag,not a DD. Pulled it out of my garage left it running
in the driveway.I was looking for something in my shed,I start to here a ticking
tuns out to be the start of a rod knock.Talked to a old truck diesel mechanic told me how to change rod and main bearings with out droping crank or pulling head.
The babit material had wore off the bearing(grey finish covering copper bearing) I bought a new set of federal mogul bearings standard size used plastic gauge
and replaced them one at a time.Slid rubber hose over rod bolts after cap was off
so rod would not mark up crank. With rod cap offpush piston up slide bearing out
but new bearing in torque to spec with plasta gauge in check size.If everything is ok put assemble lube on and retorque.Mains are a little more difficult. If you can
find some one with some basic machanical ability to help you just pm me.
Do not confuse rod knock with a spun bearing , and yes I drove that
big block for a year and 10000 ml and sold it that owner still has
it10 years later no problems.

+ 1..

Actully when i spun mine i thought it was a busted CV joint. Because it would only do it at light load. Not full load or no load. IE clutch in free revving. However I quickly ruled that out as i herd it free revving once. Then I knew what it was. I got home and called mitsu. They then informed me that they had herd of me having my car on a road course and my warranty was completly VOID. Great huh. Eventhough its stock.

And STAY away from SBR's stage 3. It's not intended for a streetcar. Aluminum rods are bad for street cars. Stage 2 is plenty. Good for 800+whp. Thats what i'm running. Also ignore sbrs website pricing as they will knock a couple hundred off the price or so if you call and get a quote. Their kits are much better priced than the AMS or buchur for the same stuff. Just to give you some advise. AMS or Buchur's stroker kit with I-Beam rods which is equal to SBR's will run you 2,600 dollars for the kit alone. Where as I got mine from SBR with pretty much the same parts for around 1800 dollars. I'm sorry I couldn't justify spending 800 more dollars for the same quality parts and just have the name. And also you can bump 400 off the 1800 if you use a remanned crank and are lookin to save some cash. However i wouldn't really advise this.

However if your gonna order a built block I would stay with AMS or Buchur if your in a hurry because SBR is known for taking their time on that kindof stuff.

If you want to call me and further discuss what your hearing and all the symptons I will help you rule out if its a spun bearing or not and give you some helpful advise based on what you want to do. or you can catch me on AOL IM my sn is Violentfun.

Goodluck with everything
-Cass

Who/what is SBR? Website please.

Regarding the warranty, was that for real? Did you fight them? Were you on a road course?

Thanks.

Edit: The more I read bout t his the more I envision a class action lawsuit. Not sure about this but I don't think BMW and Benz and Lexus will be pulling this same trick.

Well the loacl service manager and I had words about that. Yes i was on a road course however it was only when the track was rented out and it wasn't timed "racing". So i got the one up on him and he said that he needed to forward this to mmna and to call this #. Well I call and he had wrttien on my VIN that he blacklisted that my car had a wheels, suspension, which it does have.. then a carbon clutch, exhaust, turboupgrade, and ecu. Which it doesn't. Pretty sad they wouldn't even look at my car based on all those lies. This guy is purely an *******. Total dooche. We've bought 3 cars from these people and never wheel again. Honestly I don't think its even worth fighting. I don't know if I could win because hes just going to lie and i really dont have time for his bull****.

Onrails I hear you Man, sometimes even the good fight is not worth fighting.

I want to do a Buscur stage 2 to my car but the wararnty issue is keeping on the fence. I understand voiding parts of the warranty that the upgrades affect but I don't want some slack jawed yockel taking pictures of my car and denying ALL future warranty work.
