Gear dependant signal?

What I am looking to do is trigger my nitrous solenoid after 1st gear. I was thinking that there must be some gear dependant signal somewhere in the harness that I could tap into an use to trigger a relay. Of course I could just use a momentary switch, but that is too simple.

I don't think there is any sensor on the car that tells the ECU what gear it is in. All aftermarket gear indicators I have seen calculate the current gear based on wheel speed and rpm (taking the ratio).

RPM based switches are pretty common (also called RPM "window switches"), and you can get switches that trigger on speed (e.g. fire no2 if speed > 25 mph) - although wheel spin will kill you on that one. There are also TPS sensor switches (http://www.zeitronix.com/tcac/tcac.htm).

Thanks I am currently using the Utec to trigger the N2o solenoid. It works great becasue I can set the parameters for an RPM window as well as TPS. I am just looking for a simple way to trigger it after 1st gear. If all as fails I found a wireless switch made by Greddy that mounts on the steering wheel. It seems like the best option this far.

I used to just hit the toggle switch that activated the solenoids immediately after the shift to second. (it was placed on the side of the center console maybe 3-4" from the shifter) It actually worked out better I think for me because the delay helped keep the tire spin down in 2nd and then I left it on during the 3rd and 4th gear shifts with a window switch for protection. I used it this way on my 2000 Eclipse GT, and my 1995 Talon AWD. Strangely, the Talon seemed to spin more in 2nd than the Eclipse, however the Eclipse had a POS ZEX kit.

That is essentially what I will be doing with this wireless switch. I like that I can strap it to the wheel in 2 seconds with no wires. Just keep it in the glovebox until I need it.

If that wireless switch had been out when I was running my system, I'm sure I would have picked it up. If you use it, add a post to this to let me know how it works out. Good luck!
