Any Truth to this? "Two Step on Stock ECU is BAD."

I read a thread on another Evo site and it had a member stating that setting your stationary rev limiter to act as a Two Step will cause engine damage.

However when you use AEM or other standalones which are capable of two step will be ok.

Two step = Anti-lag + Stationary Rev Limit.

Explanation:

AEM retards timing during two step.
When two stepping fuel is given and makes explosions in the exhaust manifold which causes the back housing of the turbo to spin thus building boost. With Stanalones you can set a two step boost limit and the waste gate will take care of the rest as if you were driving. However it retards timing so there won't be much stress on the engine. Most likely your turbo will fail if used too much or improperly.
Thats the idea. (not the most technical explanation but im pretty sure everyone gets the idea)

The stock ecu does not retard timing so if held to long the engine is put under a lot of stress. That can cause a rod to go into your oil pan like mine did.

I found out about this too late but it can probably help others, especially if you are not ready to rebuild or go into major moding.
If you are not ready for that become a better driver and practice with out the two step or get a standalone.

Any Truth to this? I am about to flash my otherwise stock Evo and I also want to set my limiter to 6200.

It's built in - you are not adding it. All you're doing is changing the RPM at which it engages. If it's so bad, do you think Mitsu would have added it from the factory? At the same time, please don't sit on the limiter for 20 seconds like Miguel (Evil Evo VIII) and don't set the rpm too high.

If this is the case then why does the Evo 8 come with a factory 5500 RMP two step? Did your Evo not come with the two step from the factory?

1) Only the 05 VIIIs, not all VIIIs.
2) It's 5000rpm.
3) Yes, all 06s have it.

I used to have a 2003 Evo VIII. No two step, just rev and go. I recently got a Evo IX, so this is all new to me.

so if you are adding the two-step to your 03-04 evo, would this have an affect on your car like in the first post by high psi?

It's actually there already, but it's set above the regular rev limiter, so you never notice it. All you'd be doing is lowering the rpm to a reasonable level, and it works fine. Many of us have used the built-in 2-step for a few years now without any issues, so I don't know what that guy is talking about in the original quote. Maybe he was dumb and sat there for 30 seconds on the 2-step, I dunno...

The guy must have had a weak rod to begin with due to previous damage. I have had my car tuned to a 6500 two-step and have not had any problems with it. I have probly launched my car fifty times. Yes, I do have an aftermarket clutch.

Ive read the thread on the other site where the poster says the stock 2-step is bad. You cant go off what he said cause he openly admitted he used to sit on the 2-step for extended amounts of time.....just food for thought

so no, there shouldnt be any damage as long as you arent stupid

I don't think the argument that if mitsu put it there it is fine is very valid. Mitsu did not put it there so you could launch the hell out of your evo. I am sure they were sick of people reving it up to 7k dropping the clutch then bringing there car in for warranty work when something breaks. Most people will not hold it up against the limiter for more then 5 seconds or so which I do not think would put to much stress in there but for sure the people that are holding it against the limiter for that long are doing more harm then good.

I only hit the Launch Control Twice, once just to see it. And another time to launch (which i did quite nicely in my opinion) Only thing was the lingering smell of burnt clutch, After that I decided that for my clutches sake launching wasn't too bright.
