transfer case leaking oil

i was driving home and started to hear the t-case howling. the sound keep getting louder and louder. i was only 3 miles away from home, so i decided to drive the whole way home to look at it. when i got home, drove the car on ramps and looked underneath the car. oil all over the from the drive shaft back. looked around and i think the oil is coming from the drive shaft output seal. here are the questions.

1) is this a common problem for 03 evos (or all evos 8-9 in general)
2) other then the drive shaft output seal, where else could the leak come from?
2) if it turns out the be the drive shaft output seal, could i replace the seal without taking out the t-case. can i just remove the rear cap from the t-case to install the seal.

That little white knob in the middle of the four screws is a breather/overflow outlet and oil will occasionally get out of there when overfilled.

As for the howling....i can only assume that its blown.

Heres the part im talking about, highlighted in hot pink....

i did change the t-case fluid about 2k miles ago, but i'm pretty sure i didn't over fill it because i didn't see any dripping in my garage floor. the fluid that came out was clear. if the diff was blown, i would think the fluid would be darker. i think the noise came from the fact that most of the t-case fluid leaked out. the noise probably came from the ring and pinion gear.

well the ring and pinion gear would be making noise BECAUSE of low fluid.

yes, that's where i think the noise is coming from. not becuase the diff is blown. if the diff was blown, i would think darker fluid would be coming out.

the main questing is has anyone replace the rear seal without removing the whole t-case?

Well yes the sound is because of low oil...And i think that your ring and pinion might be damaged...

update,
just to confirm that you can remove the rear oil seal without remove the rear t-case cap. you just have to remove the drive shaft and pop the seal out with a screw driver. the seal looked in good shape and there were still plenty of fluid that came out of the t-case when i drained it. there were some metallic in the fluid but no big chunks.

i'm starting to think the leak came from the breather hole on top of the t-case because there were still plenty of fluid in the t-case when i drained it. i decided to check the trainy oil and it seemed kinda low (just changed it 2k miles ago the same time as t-case and rear diff).

here's another question. is it possible for the tranny fluid to leak into the t-case causing it to over flow? or if the viscous coupling in the center diff go out, does it cause the t-case fluid to over flow?

The tranny fluid does not come in contact with the fluid in the t-case.

Usually it does not but if your seal is leak than the tranny fluid can go in..
The same thing happened with me...
And the metal pieces were of ring and pinion
U will be in need of a new or a upgraded trans very soon

does anyone what the part number is for the drive shaft seal on the transfer case, or where i can order it online. the seal cost $5 but it'll cost me $10 in gas just to drive to the nearest dealer to pick it up plus my car is down right now.
