Evolution IX Turbo VS. Evolution VIII 10.5 Turbo

I currently have a 2005 Evolution VIII GSR, and my buddy is trying to sell me his Turbo off his 2006 Evolution IX MR, and I was wondering if their any significant gains over my turbo.

I'm not a pro and I just bought my Evo IX but when I was test driving the IX and VIII I didn't see any difference. Both cars have the same HP/Torque. But then again, I could be wrong and the VIII could be using a smaller turbo with more boost. Anyone else know? I'd like to know as well. -T-

The title says VIII 10.5 housing...which is the same as the IX IIRC.

10.5 is the size of their hot sides. The IX has a larger compressor (cold side) than the VIII too.

Yeah the 2005 Evo's have a 10.5 Hotside Turbo, which is what this guy was referring to in the title

I believe a couple people have done this can remember who but try a search. The 9 turbo is good for 10 to 20hp over the 8. It's why I'm looking at it. So depending how much you get it for and the extra parts you'll need to install it which consists of new oil lines I believe it may be worth it. $400 is the max I would pay.

Don't waste your time. The IX and the VIII have the same exact turbo. The only difference is a larger compressor cover, not the wheel. That may allow a tiny bit more airflow.

The major reason the nine has better torque and power is because of the MIVEC. IMO, buying your friends IX turbo would be a total waste of time and money.

I agree. Your money, and install time, would be much better spent on something like cams

If you don't buy it let your friend know that I will.

These highlighted sections are in direct opposition to each other. Either it is the same or it isnt and in this case it isnt. However you are correct, and I agree with you very much, that its not worth the money to swap unless you get the turbo for free. There are ways to get 10-20hp more out of an VIII for less than the cost of the IX turbo that you need to do anyway in the build life of the car.

If you can get his IX turbo for $300 or less, you might want to go for it. Then send it to FP and get it upgraded to the FP Green for $999 and you have a $1,700 turbo for $1300.
