I wasn't aware that drag racing will blow 4th as fast as road racing. If your beating on it like that than maybe you should get the 5 speed.

Hopefully by the time mine breaks, someone will have a better fix for 4th gear because I like my 6 speed a LOT more than my old 5-speed.

Yea me too, although i was talking to a couple of friends that have the shep 5 speeds and they made it sound like its as smooth and easy to shift as the 6 speed.

I would not even hesitate to put a 5spd in it. The 6 spd's are known to go out and if you drag/street race it'll last even shorter of a lifespan. I would get to findin a 5spd.

Im not sure what you mean by compare, he would have to drive the other persons 5 speed for 22k miles including track events to compare.

6 speed manuals are highly over-rated.

That is a very one sided statement. I take it that you haven't owned both 5 and 6 speed trannies. Please if you dont have any valid information than dont post.

ok well i keep hearing about the 4th gear thing and i havent experienced anything yet... i street race but i dont launch the car... well maybe like once a week... if even that... i dont pop the clutch... and as for your swap did you read about the dude that blew his evo 9 motor????? he did a 6-5 speed swap... had some mod's... and the motor blew on him(not saying it was the tranny fault but i think it has something to do with it)... if you're going to do it make sure to triple check everything... all your oil and that everything i bolted up right...

i recently just blew my 6 speed... first, second, and reverse all at once. i guess something broke loose and mangled everything. I had a TRE stage3 - 5 speed built. The core of the 6 speed is $1500 and the core of the 5 speed was $750. SO it was kinda like getting an extra 750 off the price. My stage 3 with 5 speed converstion kit ($450) was about 1500. Just some food for thought

Dunno the 6speed box compared to the 5speed box in the EVO just feels so much better. Its a shame there has been these recent failures....

The 5 speed is a lot stronger transmission compared to the 6 speed. The gears are much larger, design is much better and it holds more fluid. If you let TRE or Shep work on the 5 speed it shift as smooth as the 6 speed, so synchros stop being as issue. If your 6 speed is broken, rebuild it with a TRE or Shep 5 speed and be done with it. Warrtalon had his 6 speed go and he replaced it with a 5 speed. Another member VoidHawk had his 6 speed go out twice .... The 6 speed is expensive to repair as parts are waaaay more expensive, while the 5 speed while being stronger are much cheaper to repair. It's cheaper and better to rebuild with a 5 speed.

I have a 6 speed and was going to replace mine with a 5 speed TRE tranny I built but decided against it due to personal reasons. So now the 5 speed TRE tranny and all the shift assembly required to do the conversion is for sale (in my sig). PM me if you are interested ....

I just recently had my 6 spd service by mitsu for a 4th gear grind. As long as its covered by warranty i will stick with it... i had 25000 miles on it.
