Is this my transfer case or what

Today has just sucked, Well i was leaving the gas station and i got on it in 2nd and went to third and a huge sound of things breaking i thought to myself instantly "is this my transfer case" i was just shocked. It put in neutral and coasted then put it into 4th and it just reved to 7rpms like the clutch was slipping. I managed to pull into a parking lot. I tried moving it in every gear it would start to move then lock up. Later on it just wouldnt grab at all. Someone just let me know for sure what it is info on the 03 evo with 23000 miles on it has a act clutch and flywheel and pretty much all the bolt ons with a evo 9 turbo there was no signs of problems with the tranny other than 3rd gear syncro. Thanks

Sounds like the tranny to me because you were shifting when the "boom" happened. I have a feeling you broke a fork or something and its being eaten by gears. The TC snapping should just spin freely in any gear or make horrible grumbling noises as it moves depending on your level of total destruction.

Pull the plugs on the transfer case oil and the transmission oil into a nice wide pan and look for shavings. This will tell you what snapped the TC or the tranny.

Not a professional opinion at all just a guess.

You say it would start to move and then "lock up". What does "lock up" mean? Would it start to move and then just rev freely? Sounds like the clutch disc may have shattered. Was the T/C whining up to this point? Do you launch a lot?

Some people were saying the my clutch sounded like it was shattered there was a little whine but not bad. I havent lauched on this clutch. It was a act pressure plate was a some crap disk. so its possible. At first the car would move then it would just lock up wouldnt move forward anymore. Then later on the clutch wouldnt grab at all. Its also 20 degrees here if that makes a difference But its Texas Ha

I have my doubts on the clutch shattering for a couple reasons.

1) you had shifted (rpms lower now)
2) it moved at all after being destroyed

Course its not like I'm never wrong Sure would be a nicer answer than what i suspect is reality.

Could there be any ways besides taking the tranny out and draining the fluids to find out what it is because if its major then someone taking over the car soon.

If you want to upgrade the transmission or transfer case then there are two shops that i know.

First being Sheppard racing transmissions and secondly TRE, Sheppard from what I've been told has a better rep

not likely. if it were the TOB, the car would still be able to get into gear clutchless and drive without any problems (just have to clutchless shift and rev match to engage gears). from what it sounds, jack can get it into gear it just doesn't move anywhere.

jack heres a couple things to check... like someone already said, drain the TC and the tranny and see if there are metal shavings in either. if there are significant chunks, then you know the problem.

if they both come up clean, then i would suspect clutch. you can remove the sight hole cover and look in there with a flashlight and see if any chunks fall out the hole. but pretty much the only way to tell is to take it apart.

Damn just checked the tranny fluid and there alot of metal shavings but no chunks .The transfer case fluid looked fine. So i guess my gears are pretty much gone.
