Please Help Car Running Rich At Idle

I'm havig some problems starting the car. The problem occurs everytime now.

You cannot start the car cold. You have to give it some gas in order for the car to warm up and idle properly.

When you start the car already warmed up the idle is very low and dips to 700rpms. I have a test pipe, and you can smell rich gas fumes outside of the car.

When driving the car, it seems its sputtering and I can hear exhaust pops behind the car. You can also smell rich exhaust fumes. It feels like the engine is having trouble moving the car.

Now this is the weird part.

To drive my Evo with a normal idle, I have to stop the car and restart it. It take me about 3-4 tires to make the car idle like normal.

When I get the car to idle normaly on the 4th or 5th try restarting the car. The problem goes away. The car drives normaly again.

I'm guessing that the front 02 sensor is bad and when starting the car its running very rich, and that causes the car to stumble at idle with the rich exhaust fumes that I can smell.

Need some advice about this matter.

Thanks for all the help.

What mods? I had a cone intake, and the oil on my filter, got on my tungsten wire in the MAF, and ruined that. Was in "limp home mode" running RICH till I bought a new MAF.

I got a HKS RS Filter, I already cleaned it out the MAF tugsten wire via MAF Cleaner spray.

Is your MAF connected?
If you know somebody that will lend you another MAF try it.
I'm guessing you have a bad MAF.

It might have something to do with your posts being at 666. The devil owns your Evo's soul. Really, I had a long night at work and I do apologize.

How much is a new MAF anyways? If its expesive I might just go with the AEM to get rid of the MAF.

The problem is that the car never goes to closed loop fueling once its warmed up.

You have to shut down the car and restart it a few times so that it can go to closed loop fueling? Strange? What is the cause of this?

Bad 02? sensor? or Bad MAF?

When the engine is cold after you start the car it will stall immediately. You have to give is some gas so that it could warm up and idle properly.

What about a 2 year old mini battery?

I have the Odyssey 680 Mini Battery.

Do you guys think I need a new replacement mini battery?

Bump for more answers.

Thanks

Try the knock sensor. It's cheaper than the MAF.

Why the Knock Sensor?

No, I haven't had a chance to swap out the MAF with a fellow EVO owner.

How about the front 02 sensor?

The thing is when you get it to idle normaly the car runs 100%

It takes about three to four times starting the car to make the car run like normal.

When not runing normaly the car is running rich, and you can smell it from the exhuast fumes at the back of the car.

The car is in limp mode, very hard to go into boost.

Thanks guys

-Archie

When my front O2 sensor went bad, I got a CEL all the time, ran rich as hell, car would bog sometimes and gas mileage went from 19-20mpg to like 14-15mpg. Replaced it, good as new.

Try check all your hose connections, see if there are any loose ones. Maybe try switching MAFs with someone to see if that's a problem. Check sparkplugs and wires and maybe coil?
