Cam Combinations Need a little help

I understand how Camshafts work, how more aggressive Cams increase LIFT & DURATION, and the point of TIMING adjustment.
It’s Cam Combinations I’m not clear on.
I have read some guys running cam combinations in there Evo IXs like the ones I have listed...
Stock IX intake – 272 Exhaust,
Stock IX intake – 280 Exhaust,
272intake – 272exhaust,
272intake – 280exhaust,
280intake – 272exhaust,
280intake – 280exhaust,
Would someone here please be kind enough to explain the gains of each one of these Cam Combinations and why you would chose one combination over another?
Thank you for your time,

it really all depends on what your gonna do after the Cams, I have an 8 with a 264/272 combo and its nice and responsive, but it lacks a bit of topend. The cams you choose are important because they control the way the car is gonna run/idle all will make power! In any case the cams really allow the motor to come to life and you wont regret doing them no matter which combination you go with.

This season I am looking for some more MPH on my Trap so I am switch my intake cam to a 272. Ill let ya know what the difference is from 264/272 to 272/272

Generally speaking the more aggressive duration a camshaft is the more your power band will be shifted to the right. But you can't look at this in a vacuum, your turbo size, boost pressure, and overall tune affect this greatly. In my opinion if you're looking for an Auto-X setup stick with the 264's. But if you're looking for decent top-end power (keeping in mind the EVO has great spool compared to many other turbo cars) go with the 272's and just have the midrange tuned out. That said the 272s will have a slightly lumpier idle.

We've had quite a few customers start with a 264 because they want to be "conservative" then end up with 272's or longer because they wanted more top end. Oh BTW we do have Helix 272's on sale at $399.

Cheers,

Gary

Thank You Gary,
Keep in mind I have an Evo IX. So, we are looking at 272's or 280's.
I'm looking for the best cam combination for the stock IX Turbo pushing 22 - 24psi on E85 fuel.
Its a daily driver that I enjoy driving and I wanna keep it that way. So I think i'm looking at one of these three combos...
272intake – 272exhaust,
272intake – 280exhaust,
280intake – 272exhaust,

Hey sorry about that, I should have read your profile. For the IX we generally offer the Cosworth cams because of the MIVEC controller. These are 272 duration cams, the performance gains are substantial. To save a bit of money you can run the 272 exhaust cam only and leave the MIVEC intake cam as stock - there are performance gains from doing this, just not as much as swapping the intake cam out. There's not a whole lot of MIVEC cams available, so unfortunately your choices are limited.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks for the get-backs!!!
I’m sorry if my post seems to go off in a few different directions. But, this is a response for two threads.
If a passing MOD would please merge the two thread together. “Thank You in advance”

The available MIVEC cams I am looking at 1st and for most is RIPP Modifications custom 280 Intake – 280 Exhaust, 272 Intake – 272 Exhaust or the YES the COSWORTH 272 Intake – 272 Exhaust cams.
I have heard of GSC Motorsport Cams and TurboTrix’s custom 280 Intake – 280 Exhaust cams.
But, getting MIVEC cams are no issue here, it’s what Camshaft Combination is best for me.
Every one I know running 280 Intake – 280 Exhaust like
J. Gunnz, Guys like Brandon running 280 Intake – 272 Exhaust, or Joe “rjsdxm” running a stock IX Intake – 280 Exhaust are all running bigger turbos.
I just want the most power I can get from my stock 16G.

That’s why I’m pushing so hard for a very definitive answer.
