Exclamation Shifting problems - Transmissions?

Hey guys,

I searched for an answer to my problem, and found similar threads with similar issues, but I want to ask about my exact problem before I spend $1500 for a transmission rebuild.

I have an 05 Evo MR (6 speed) and my shifting lately has been grinding a lot, especially when cold. The biggest problem is 2nd gear. When upshifting from 1st, sometimes I'm completely locked out, sometimes it grinds terribly and won't let me into gear, sometimes it'll grind for a second and then let me into gear before I have time to react and pull the shifter back into neutral. Sometimes it's buttery smooth... Shifting seems to improve as the engine warms up; it's worst when cold. I can't downshift into 2nd without double clutching, and even then it grinds sometimes. 3rd gear isn't as bad as this, but I do get locked out sometimes when downshifting and it isn't terribly smooth when upshifting to 3rd most of the time. 4th , 5th, and 6th are still doing ok.

Shifting mods I have done to my car: shifter bushings, under-hood shifter bushings, removed restrictor pill, stainless steel clutch line, front motor mount. Car has 31,000 miles on it still with the stock clutch.

I've already tried adjusting the clutch pedal so that it engages further up in its travel hoping this would solve the problem, but no dice. I have a brand new Exedy Cerametallic clutch waiting to go in, but I don't know that this will solve my problem.

I'm really afraid that it's a synchro wear problem and that I'm going to have to get my whole transmission rebuilt. If this is the case I'm going to send it out to TRE or Shep, but it's hella expensive!

Can anyone confirm exactly what the problem is here and what the best course of action is for me to take? Thanks for the help!

Try changing your transmission fluid to see if it resolves the issue at all. If it doesnt your 2nd gear synchro is probably done.

I just changed the transmission fluid at 30,000 miles. I used the Mopar GL-4 fluid that's equivalent to the Mitsu fluid for the 6-speed transmission. I'm thinking now of changing it back to the Mitsu fluid??

Do you think at this point my transmission is toasted or should I be ok once I switch the fluids back? I've put maybe 2000 miles on the car with the Mopar GL-4 fluid...

hate to say it but that is the same thing that happened to my 03 at 30k miles and it was the synchros that were bad.

I got mine fixed via warrenty but with your mods they may not warrenty it.

I have the same problem with my 5th and 6th.

Everyone I talk to says to swap to a 5 speed, and don't even waste your time rebuilding the 6, because 4th gear is going to shatter eventually.

For 1500 bucks you can get a nice used 5 speed and the conversion kit.

Cool I'm going to get right on that this weekend, and hopefully everything works out!
