Battery Relocation Fuse Protection

Relocated the batter to the trunk... simple install, things went well.

I'd like to put an in-line fuse by the battery in the trunk, just for extra protection, just in case somehow the cable decides to wear through the protective sheathing and try to ground to the chassis. I put an amp meter on my battery cable while trying to start the car (crank sensor disconnected of course). I got a quick spike up to 250 amps before it settled at 130 amps while the car was cranking.

Question is, what size fuse should I go with? Anyone have experience? I thought a 150 amp fuse would be plenty, but with the spike to 250 amps on initial crank, it concerns me that won't be enough. A couple repeats of the experiment all showed very short lived spikes north of 200, but 250 was the most I registered.

Thanks in advance.

Thats what happens with DC motors...they require extra at start up.

the spike might make it through for a second because it acutally has to heat the fuse which will allow a short burst. So I would use a bigger fuse like a 180, it will still blow if theres a short to be safe when the battery flips on a launch

yeah, these were my thoughts also. It's always better to duplicate something else that's been proven to work on our cars, instead of being the guinea pig

Thanks for the input.

Stereo shops carry circuit breakers that work well for this IMO. I'd rather have something I can just reset so I can still get home. I ran a 125 or 150 on the 2g and never tripped it.

I looked into this, and decided I couldn't possible reduce my 0 gauge to a puny little fuse. just looking at them they have no cross section, I don't see how they can conduct like the battery lead.

I ran the lead up under the door sill covers and out through the door grommet, under the fender to the motor.
havng a fuse makes sense but i couldn't do it.

Resistance is also a function of length. Fuses and breakers are very short. Risking burning your car to the ground sounds like a better alternative?
