Why you MUST get a tune when you add a air intake to your Evo
Not meaning to hijack the thread but what is the thought on an ARC intake?
I had my car tuned by Al for a TBE and K&N drop in filter.....should I have it re-tuned with the ARC intake?
Thanks.

No one should be just buying an intake anyway. Exhaust should be the first mod, then depending on your future plans, a tune.
If people drive around with an exhaust, intake and something else because they dont want to get tuned because theyre saving for cams or something, that makes sense. However, a tune will yield massive hp and tq gains so not doing a tune in general is pretty dumb.
are we talking about just a cone filter with adapter or a hard intake pipe and filter??
What affect does just a filter have?..........i know that a intake pipe can cause erratic maf signals
Thanks in adavance

Bottom line, if you don't have the ability to monitor your engine and knowledge to interpret it to see how it's running (data stream, etc.) then you probably should leave the modifying and tuning up to the people who know.
I've seen cars that were tuned on a poorly running/unproperly maintained engine and the tune killed the engine too. Just some food for thought.

Yeah I put an intake on my car when it had around 2000 miles. I noticed the car felt slower, especially in the midrange. The next week I put on the TBE which made it feel better, then shortly thereafter I got a tune with cams, and... well you know the rest.
This is old news. I thought everyone knew that putting a cone style filter intake on the Evo would cause problems and need a tune. Even if the car "seems" to run okay with it, still should get tuned for it. That or don't put it on the car until you are ready for a tune. The same goes for cookie cutter flashes. Do you really think that EVERY Evo is the exact same and would therefore react the exact same way to a flash? Flash is the worst kind of tune you can get.
30,000 miles on my HKS RS intake, NO TUNE, NO PROBLEMS. Compression is 170 at each cylinder. The stock tune runs very rich. This particular incident was probably due to previous bad tuning. The only reason I have this many miles on this intake (without a tune) is because the previous owner did not get a tune while running this intake. I personally would not have done this but it seems like it has had no effect on my car, it still runs insanely rich.

uhh... had my hks rs on my 8 for over 40k miles. added downpipe, test pipe, and catback thereafter. still not tuned yet. done a couple auto-x's too. Cars still runs great. AFR's are good. Figure I'd wait until I got some injectors and cams before a tune. Is my motor going to go kaboom? ...maybe I'll let you guys know in another 40k miles. btw, I've got 80k on my evo
That dyno must read really high, is it just me because with just an HKS intake and a cracked ringland and running so shi*ty how did it manage to still get 258 as a baseline.

Maybe your filter was dirty JK
Anyhow I think this very same thing happened several times before with same intake and mid rpm/power lean.
The intake is a great part for saving space and cleaning up the engine bay and provides decent airflow, however, not only does it change the path of airflow over the sensor, it filters like crap
