Forge WGA torn apart... suprise inside

After having some boost issues even after a new MBC was installed I did another boost leak test and noticed the WGA was leaking around where the arm comes out of the casing. To my suprise it was full of "gunk" as pictured below.

I'm not really sure wtf happened here but I would imagine not running an undertray for a while contributed to this. I plan to get the FP OEM EVO9 "Upgraded" WGA but I would like to see if I can get this one rebuilt or sold for parts.

I cleaned and relubed everything so it's all good other than the spring being a little crusty

^^ That looks awful...I have been considering an upgraded WGA and this concerns me...Maybe the FP is a better unit.

This was an evo8 modified to fit the evo9 turbo. It could have been a flaw from the guy that made it.. sux considering how expensive they are.

Have you contacted Forge to determine the cause? I would expect them to fix it and explain why it failed...

Theres no way not having a undertray on the car would cause all that crap to get in there. There is something else up with that. Did you buy the wastegate new or used?

When you say that the unit was an VIII WGA modified to work on a IX turbo, what exactly do you mean. Was it modded by Forge, a previous owner, or you yourself, and what exctly were the modifications made to it?

It was modded by a previous owner and practically brand new. The bracket was adjusted so that it fit properly. I think somehow the arm got twisted which broke the seal around the arm and allowed water in it.

Having an undertray and putting the hoodvent back in should help some... I still think I'll switch over to the FP upgraded as soon as I can.

It already looks as good as new other than needing a replacement spring... I would definitely get new seals for it... BUT if the bracket being modified is putting strain on the arm which allows the water in.. then I wont bother selling it knowing it might happen to someone else.

If I had bought it from forge I'd seek a replacement.. but for now I'm looking for creative ways to destroy it lol

tie it to the tow hook on the back of the car, then give a 50 foot slack and just get on a highway and drive fast... should be interesting lol

That same thing happened to my Forge on my Evo 8. I'm positive that it is getting water pass that blue seal at the end of the spring. It can only come from the hood vent which I suspect was leaking down into that seal. My spring is in a much worse condition than the one pictured. I had it initially set for 18psi on spring alone. Now all I can muster is 13psi on spring alone. It is clearly a design issue. If you look at any stock wastegate you will notice that it has a cover attached to the swing arm that shields the body of the wastegate from getting any water into it.
This simply is not an isolated incident as the exact same thing happened to a buddy of mine. I haven't had the time to contact Forge yet as I am dealing with other issues with the car at this time.
