Break-in *confused*

I got my Evo two days ago and currently have 158miles on it. I am confused about the break-in time.
Some people say it is 500miles, some people say 1500miles ??

I never did above 5000rpms for two days. Should I keep it lower or can I go up to 6000rpms during the break-in time?
Going above the required rpm during this period, how bad for the car?

Thanks in advance
Memo

Mitsubishi's "official" break-in period for the engine is 600 miles, during which they recommend not exceeding 5000 RPM.

Everyone's experience is a little different. Mitsubishi recommends 600 miles.. I was easy on the car for the first 400 miles.. Then occasionally brought it up to 6000 when driving a little more aggressively, not abusing the car though. I took it easy until around 1500, but did a little bit of racing, again, no real abuse.. Turns out my car runs a little stronger than most other EVO's, not sure if it had to do with my breakin, or just my car's temperment. I can tell you that the car will continue to run stronger over time until about 10k miles, I guess thats about how long it takes to finally get everything run-in properly..

I find it odd that Mitsu mentions not going over 5k rpm during breakin, but they never mention anything about boosting your turbo before breakin, which can obviously be at max boost well before 5k. I've always heard tubos needed breaking in too, but I wouldn't think Mitsu would overlook something so obvious if it were a large issue.

Whats frustrating is all the rules change when you deal with synthetic oils..

Yes, we have a warranty (in theory ) which is good for us; it just seems odd that Mitsubishi isn't more conservative in their breakin recommendations. Maybe they ARE being conservative and the rules HAVE simply changed due to whichever variables. I hope so, for one, as I know I couldn't hold back the boost at times during breakin.

i think mitsu knows about the possibility of max boost and figured it into their break in period
