Cams yes or no

Wasn't sure if I should cam my IX or not. Did some searching and found out that a lot of you guys like the GSC S1 Cams but what about the 280 /280 setup? Right now I have most of the bolt ons, (TBE, Intake, LICP, Fuel pump, MBC, and with that Al tuned me to roughly 350 hp and 331 tq. I have since added a ported manifold, O2 housing, UICP, FMIC, and I am kinda up in the air about alky and cams. I decided I would like to stay with the stock turbo but would like to get close to 400 hp and 400 tq if possible. I would like to stay off the alky if I can get close to this with the mods I have and the cams. So I quess my question is with the mods listed and staying on the stock turbo and 93 pump gas can 400hp and 400tq be achieved with eithier the S1 cams or the 280/ 280 cams or will I definitely need the alky kit?

cams and send your turbo to FP to get the FP green turbo upgrade. Would net you close to 400/400 on some dyno's

Al (DynoFlash) did a tune in January I believe with Cosworth cams and the results aren't as great as an VII w/ cams. If I find the thread, I'll link you

when ams tested the s1 cams on the IX they found 10 hp peak gain and 20 hp and 20 tq in the mid range. So no you will not get to 400 with only that but they are deffinately a must.

Cams are all about making consistent power... when it comes down to it, peak HP/TQ do not mean as much as consistent HP/TQ

Cams will flatten out your curves and provide solid power all the way up past redline

+1 on cams first, then EvoGreen, then alky... IMHO, do as much as you can on pump gas and go from there.

not sure what 280/280 cams you were looking at; the newer GSC S1's have been shown to make greater power than the older GSC 272/280 sets... I just ordered a set of the GSC S1's for my IX last week, will give a review in about 2-3 weeks after install + tune... My IX has mostly the same mods as yours minus the FMIC and UICP. I plan to upgrade next to the FP Green - should see around 400awhp on pump 93 with those mods.

I wouldn't worry so much about the peak numbers. The S1's have been shown to add 20whp and 25wtq to the midrange of a Stage 1 Evo IX's powerband. This is more important than trying to have the highest peak numbers - those are just for bragging rights - until your car gets walked by someone with lower peak #'s, but a nice fat powerband...

cams are not 100% Proven yet. They may show some gains at the Dyno, certainly havn't shown on the track. IX's are running VERY VERY fast without them, an dthe Turbo is Maxed out as is. It may help a little, but nothing mind blowing like the VIII's had.

I dont think cams on a IX are going to give you a huge increase. You'll probly see a small gain but nothing huge, nothing like cams on an VIII.

If your not upgrading your turbo, cams wont do too much.

I would however recommend the GSC S1's over the Cosi's, Cosi's are made for larger turbo's. S1's will give you some gains without any losses.

I'm surprized no one has told you this yet, but I'm not even sure that you're even at 350hp with the mods you have. Most with those same mods are hitting around 315-330hp. But giving the benefit of the doubt--let's say you are at 350--the cams will probably net you 20-25hp, and the alky will allow you to run higher boosts but I doubt it will be another 30hp.

It's odd how many people are obsessed with the numbers, when there is no consistent standard of measure. Sure you've got 400 on THIS dyno, but what is it in reality? Ya know what I mean? If you know what a particular dyno started you off at, I would use that same dyno and measure the gains, knowing that the end result is just a number. Use the track as the standard of measurement. Check your times and traps. After all you want a fast car right? Numbers don't make it fast, being fast makes it fast. You could have 400hp and lose to another EVO with 380 and shed some fat.

I'll get off my soapbox now--long story short--I'd definitely do the cams, it's not going to hurt your performance, it will only help it.
