EVO.....LSD/stock turbo questions

I'm not here to start a flame-war, i've got much respect for the new EVO and if there's a demand, I even plan to start importing JDM parts for it....

With that out of out of the way, the first question i have is, does the stock EVO turbo take forever to spool up?? I absolutely killed my friend's EVO on the freeway a few weeks ago. It was as if his car was standing still. I thought it was really odd because my GT-FOUR is only at the stock 12 psi boost level while the EVO has a stock 19psi boost setting......then I read an article that complained alot about the EVO's turbo taking a long time to kick in. The turbo on my GT-FOUR is ceramic and spools instantly so it makes sense that i pulled on my friend immediatly......but still, how much lag can the stock EVO turbo have?? Have you guys that have driven other turbo AWD cars noticed this?

The other question I have is about the drivetrain on the EVO, does it have front and/or rear LSD?? How high do you guys usually launch yours at??

Hi,

The EVO runs 19psi at 3500rpm at WOT with decreasing boost down to 16 or so at redline. The EVO twin scroll turbo is exceptionally responsive compared to single volute 16g's that I have (and do) own. All I can tell you is that inexperienced turbo drivers contribute to the lag issue. They are simply in the wrong gear. And comparing boost pressure between different turbo's is useless unless you have compressor efficiency maps at your disposal.

More info would help concerning the highway kill. Are you in California using 91 octane? Where you driving a Supra? Lots of higher displacement cars will eat a stock EVO on a rolling race. The EVO has an open front diff and a LSD rear. Most are launching by slipping the clutch at 5000 to 6000 rpm.

Have fun!

Yep, Cali here with our cruddy 91 octane. My friend is a pretty experienced driver but maybe he's just not used to the car yet. My GT-FOUR is also a twin-entry turbo'd 2.0L with AWD. (same engine as the MR2 with AWD in a Celica body) My car is pretty gutted on the interior so maybe i have a slight weight advantage and then, like i said, my turbo is ceramic so it spools up like nothing.

I'm wondering if i can out-launch my friend since he has an open diff in the front. I've got front and rear LSD units so I should have better traction but my car is a basically stock '99 JDM setup rated a 255hp so he'll have some power on me....

In case any of you are wondering, this is what a GT-FOUR looks like:

They were labelled "celica alltrac" in the states.

dunno man ... other then the I-6 twin seq 3.0L supra .. The EVO has the least amount of turbo lag of any car I've ever been in.

I'll leave out twin turbo porsche's etc for obvious reasons

The EVO's performance is degraded on 91 octane a bunch. Have your buddy throw 3 gallons of 100 octane and 10 gallons of 91 in an empty tank and drive around for a couple days, then try that again. My money would be on the EVO.

Nice looking Celica! The open front will have little effect on launching the EVO since 3 three wheels are about as good as 4. AWD launches are a drivers race so good luck and do it at the track or very safely!! Finally, have your buddy join this forum; you'll be toast for under $600 bucks!
