Stock Ignition & HIGH BOOST (28psi+)

Well the time is coming and I will be soon running 27-28psi in my car with methanol injection.

The question is, do I need an ignition upgrade of some sort such as the HKS DLII? I never thought Id HAVE to get it but will my car misfire running such high boost?

Yeah well that could present a problem if I drive 3 hours to another state to get tuned then it starts breaking up ya know. F*ck.

Don't know about the stock ignition by itself, but at 28#'s on meth WITH the DLII, I had to lower plug gap from .028 to .025 to clear up a miss. This was on the dyno, so if you don't have an ignition amp, you may want to go a little conservative on the plug gap. I would suspect the stock ignition by itself would require an even lower plug gap than .025.

I believe i have br8es or something like that for spark plugs gapped to .23-.25 on stock ignition. Also running 28psi stock turbo on meth.

soon2bevo, i would get an ignition. some break up others dont i wouldnt chance it. mine was misfiring bad at 26 psi (only got 450whp due to ign break up) if i had an hks dli or COP would of hit 500 easy. Good luck

I've run ~26psi on 93 and 100oct. With 93 it rarely breaks up, and with 100 its hasn't. Stock ignition, stock gap.

Mine and my friends 03s wouldn't run that kind of boost without the DLI.

you may or may not misfire but to be safe just get some sort of upgrade. I'd say screw the DLII and get the sunauto hyperforce. Its basically the same thing but a little better IMO, not to mention its only $299 shipped w/ the harness instead of $450+

My stock set up would crap out @28-30psi in the lower prms range (3-4.5k) also i was runing 110 octane .
When i did add my Sun ign amp i had to back off the timing 2* to cut back on knock .

BTW my plugs were gapped to .023 with the misfire..

some cars are fine on stock ignition with smaller gapped plugs others require an ignition amplifier, my vote goes to order a hks dli or something similar, bring it to the dyno with you, if your having issues with it breaking up just swap it in real quick, if not just sell or return it afterwards...

Something that you want to take into consideration is what turbo your on, I have a simliar setup to you.

35r 280s 1000cc injectors. So forth, on the stock ECU and stock ingnition, You got a few options.

1. Sun HyperForce ~ Decent for the money, there are some people making some serious power with them. From what i have read, there are some that have had problems HOWEVER, there issues sound like a bad ground or mis install.... So i almost wanna say this is the best one to go for if you dont want to get creative.

2. HKS DLII~ Great unit, never problematic if match correctly wit the right setup...(meaning supporting mods) however the price is retarded. But it is proven to work.

3. Custom Coil On Plug (COP)~ awesome way to go, just take some work, and maybe a weekend to take out the kinks, but i think the best way to got money wise. you have to get creative when your doing so.
