Ambient -> Post-Intercooler Temps

I had to stop reading the Buschur Ebay thread because of lack of technical information. I'd like to request that only people whom have done data logging of post-intercooler temperatures reply in this thread.

So my car isn't running now (spun rod bearing, etc), but it is an Evo 6 with built 2 litre, Autronic, AMS GT35R, AMS intercooler. Now I live in the Caribbean so ambient temps are normally about 30 degrees celcius. I don't have any data logs on my laptop here... but I could have sworn intake temperature at the intake manifold (where the probe is) was about 60 degrees celcius when running the car. I wish I had a log but don't. But is a 30 degree celcius increase normal? Maybe I am not remembering it right?

David B wrote...

Air temp after the intercooler at the start of the pull, 62.60 degrees.
Air temp after the intercooler at the end of the pull, 69.80 degrees.
Increase in air temp 7.2 degrees.
Peak boost was 40.3 psi.

Now that is 7 degree fahrenheight change? That seems crazy to me. 7F above ambient temps? Maybe I'm just not remembering correctly what my old data logs looked like?

So other peeps out there... what data are you seeing on the road?

It would be important to know what the ambient temperature was in the shop the testing was done. Because the air coming out of an intercooler can be no colder than the ambient air temperature. That's just basic laws of heat transfer.

Ok I just pulled a data log off the Autronic. This would of been me harassing the car just before I spun a rod bearing :-) It would have been at night, so cooler than 30 celcius.

I am seeing at full throttle, 6800 RPM, and 28 PSI an Intake Temp of 46.3 degrees celcius. Now I suspect it is probably about 22 celcius at night here. So about 24 degrees celcius more. Which I think is pretty good!

Maybe I am reading DB's post wrong. Ok I just re-read. DB is measuring temps before and after the pull. Not during the pull. That seems pretty odd to me. No doubt after the pull results are interesting... but during pull seems to be much more logical to me.

So with an AMS intercooler I am seeing about 20-30 degree celcius increase from ambient measured at the intake manifold at 28 PSI.

DB... could you post some data similar to that? Surely data during full boost is most important? Correct?

My complaints about the DB intercooler test are that he did not measure temps when on boost. Only before and after a dyno pull. And then also, he has not specified how much time after the pulll took place before he measured the "after pull" temps. I'd suspect that is pretty important.

I suspect no matter what he tells people like you though, somehow you will find a way to discredit it or claim incomplete information. I am not riding the Buschur bandwagon by any means, I am just stating the truth. Now if he measured his core 2 hours after the pull, and the ebay one 5 mins after the pull, do you think he would tell us that. I personally believe that he did both tests with very similar variables and times. That being said, would you think that his intercooler would potentially create more heat during boost but yet dissipate it quicker after the pull?? Doesnt make much sense to me. People like you wouldnt be happy with his testing no matter what. Sorry for the non-technical post. Have a good day!

Just an FYI... "people like me"

Well let me explain... I'm putting a lot of money into my car and I'm curious how good my AMS intercooler is. So I come to websites like this to find info. If that is what you mean by "people like me" well yeah, you got it.

I didn't read the DB test thread either, but I would imagine by end of pull he meant the end of the pull, not after the pull.

And his data make sense. If you read the tests that Nisei did, their core was barely above ambient after a four gear pull. There are good intercoolers that do their job. Go over to the Nisei website and take a look at their extensive testing. They tests the AMS intercooler in the tests as well as a Buschur unit I believe. The Nisei core performed the best, hands down, and their testing was excellent, with all of the data provided.

Your results of 30* C sounds like too much of an increase. Sounds like you need a more efficient IC for your turbo.

Yeah, the more I mull it over in my head, i'm sure he meant at the instant that he started letting off on the throttle (the end of the pull).

I think your right... but I would counter it is IMPOSSIBLE that at 40 psi you are only get an increase of 7F. It just sounds ridiculous to me. Here is a log I pulled from my car.

Ambient temps would have been about 22c. So intake temp at full boost was 42c. Net increase of 20c.

It is not impossible. Go take a look at the Nisei tests. On a one gear pull a good intercooler should barely go above ambient.

20 degree increase is rediculous,,, get a new intercooler!

reading comprehension 101,

he's running an AMS intercooler. Don't be so quick to jump on people if you don't bother to really read what they type.

I'm totally not out to prove anything or discredit anyone. I just spent a lot of money on a new longblock and I want everything to be right this time around. I have an honest interest in what intercoolers perform well.

I'm merely pointing out that it would be great to get a bit more info from David B.

And even better for people running different intercoolers to post some data of their own. Anyone running a speed density based ecu should have some logs they can check.
