Factory BOV Blew Apart

Last night I was trying to lay down a new 1/4 mile time and when I shifted into fourth gear, While handing a supercharged viper his *** I might add, I heard a loud noise, and the ccar lost all power and stalled around the 1000' mark. I coasted to a 12.49 to a 12.48 from the viper.

we started it back up and listened to the motor and it sounded fine, and reved fine, except for the fact it had no power and the black smoke billowing from the tailpipe.

we limped it into the pits, and were checking everything over when a friend of mine noticed that the factory diverter valve was in two pieces. It literally came apart at the plastic welded seam.

one call into a friend of mines shop and we had a new BOV on the way to the track. We sent another group of friends to a friends machine shop to find/make a plug for the recirculation tube that we no longer need, and additional vacuum line. We installed a Turbo XS BOV venting to atmosphere, and baring forgeting to plug in the MAF we were back in business.

I need to get used to the Turbo XS valve, and that may take some time. I may put in a quieter BOV and sell this as well.

leson learned....with one payment made so far, I am not ready to kill it. I may not be back at teh track for a while....and I have begun drinking heavily

I just wanted to share my near death experience. If i had blown up, the wife would be collecting on my life insurance after executing me slowly and painfully.

Sounds like you are running some healthy mods to coast to a 12.49! What kind of boost control are you using and at what pressure?

That plastic DV is a concern on a car like the EVO particularly when pushing higher boost levels.I think yours is the first I have heard of actually splitting apart(lucky you!). Bet it wont be the last!

A nice recirculating Forge DV(or other similar DV) seems to be in the forecast for future mods to ensure longevity and reliability.

yup, a nice aftermarket compressor bypass valve would be a smart investment. The factory diverter valve is only good for low boost. But at higher boost levels, it may leak(or break in two pieces in your case).

Glad everything turned out ok. Sounds like you're putting out a lot of power, what mods have you made?

Oh yeah, have a on me.

Heard about that this morning from Courtney (black Supra). What mods do you have done (other than the juice)?

I will get a pic up, i still have the BOV.

I have a UR downpipe, UR Test Pipe, NX Wet Kit (75 Shot), and now a Turbo XS BOV RFL (kinda obnoxious).

I have some other parts on order. Once installed (maybe in the next week ) I hope to dial the juice down to a 35 shot.

BTW The BOV went when I put in the 100 shot trying to hit the 11's. I think I might have gotten there except.......

So we will try again later with more controllable mods, and less juice.

If you like the sound of dumping to the atmosphere but you still have the MAS I know of a company you should contact. www.gofastbits.com . I am testing their stealth FX BOV that has a single chamber like any other BOV but it has two openings. One side lets you recirculate and the other is a horn for dumping. The best part is its adjustable! You choose how much air you want to dump and how much you want to recir. Works great on my DSM so far. Sorry to hear about your valve though, thats scary. I think a pic would be awsome. Is the valve you split the same design as a 2g dsm? Those plastic pieces of crap are horrible. Well good luck with the TurboXs and post some pics!

Wow, the Viper driver needs to learn how to drive.

Suposedly the viper is built for top speed not the 1/4 but yeah his best I have seen was 12.35.

I will run him again, but by that time I will have the cams and exhaust.

One of the other guys there said it was the same as his factory diverter. he was driving a GSX. i am not sure what the 2G Diverter looks like, so I will take his word for it.
