On my way to fuel independence..........
Very interesting.
I'm sure along with getting government approval to obtain the equipment to produce ethanol, there are strict regulations on how you can store and dispense it.
Very interesting read.
After reading David's description of the ethanol production process I couldn't help but think of this......

I hope to make another trip out to your shop and expect to see some great things.
Good luck David.

Hi all,
As some of you have been following along you have seen how impressed I was tuning on E85. I got so involved in reading about it/studying it that I decided I wanted to produce ethanol myself.
I did quite a bit of reading/research and have figured out I can produce over 1,000 gallons per year, if I choose to do so. I have enough spare property to plant what I am guessing is a little over 3 acres of corn.
Ethanol is moonshine, plain and simple. So I bought a still, I was going to build one but decided it was too time consuming and was going to cost me quite a bit anyway. I did some shopping and asked some questions and decided on a high quality still from here: www.milehidistilling.com
The initial expense is fairly high. The process of making it is fairly time consuming but I am hoping I can "automate" it some and it less expensive to produce as I go and up production too.
It is a very interesting process. At first I found it to be very confusing but once you look at blueprints it gets much easier to understand how the reflux still operates.
According to federal law the ethanol has to be denatured (poisoned) so the moonshine can't be consumed. I have no intentions of drinking any of it, everclear does nothing for me
I am interested in running it as pure as I can, so I will probably end up with an E95 to run.
My RS is back together and it is just plain mean. I refuse to change my Brembo's on the car to some smaller brakes just to run smaller rims so I can run a slick. The car probably will probably not run an amazing ET but I am hoping to see 150+ trap speeds. I'd like to do it on Ethanol. If it busts 150 mph, it is getting a parachute!
I can't wait to burn my first gallon of fuel I made myself. This is going to be an interesting year for so many projects.

I have been interested in this for quite some time and its nice to see someone like yourself taking advantage of this. With all this global warming and our need for foreign oil this is a good stepping stone. But with using this E85 what would you need to change on an evo to run it??
There are two gauges that came with the equipment package I bought. One is a hydrometer, the other I am drawing a blank on. The ethanol when produced at best ends up around 95%, the other 5% is water. They mix fine and can be run like this down to 160-170 Proof. The remainder is water. You can NOT mix this unpure mixture with gasoline though, as soon as gasoline hits it the water seperates and then you are screwed. So you must remove the water before mixing in gas or run it straight, which is illegal because then it is moonshine.
There are a few ways to remove the water, one is another "chemical". I am also drawing a blank on the name of it for some reason. It is a solid pellet that you simply pour the moonshine through and then the water is pulled out of the mixture leaving you with 100% pure ethanol.
I believe pump fuel is mixed with 87 octane, this is the stuff you buy at a gas station they call E85.
I hope to start trying to make some immediately when I return from vacation.

might want to decant carefully or a submicron filter the water free ethanol to remove the fine ceramic dust from the sieve
David -- Congrats on the E85/95 route...I wonder if you can get farm grants from the government to grow corn / manufacture ethanol...Wouldn't that be great if you could get gov't subsidies / loans, produce great gas, and develop a tax shelter, all while making your car faster and freeing yourself from foreign oil (or reducing the need).

Went and did some shopping this weekend. I got my cans I am going to use to ferment the mash. I bought some nice 50 gallon plastic garbage cans on wheels with lids.
Two things left, ground corn and the boiler....
