On my way to fuel independence..........

Hi all,

As some of you have been following along you have seen how impressed I was tuning on E85. I got so involved in reading about it/studying it that I decided I wanted to produce ethanol myself.

I did quite a bit of reading/research and have figured out I can produce over 1,000 gallons per year, if I choose to do so. I have enough spare property to plant what I am guessing is a little over 3 acres of corn.

Ethanol is moonshine, plain and simple. So I bought a still, I was going to build one but decided it was too time consuming and was going to cost me quite a bit anyway. I did some shopping and asked some questions and decided on a high quality still from here: www.milehidistilling.com

The initial expense is fairly high. The process of making it is fairly time consuming but I am hoping I can "automate" it some and it less expensive to produce as I go and up production too.

It is a very interesting process. At first I found it to be very confusing but once you look at blueprints it gets much easier to understand how the reflux still operates.

According to federal law the ethanol has to be denatured (poisoned) so the moonshine can't be consumed. I have no intentions of drinking any of it, everclear does nothing for me I am interested in running it as pure as I can, so I will probably end up with an E95 to run.

My RS is back together and it is just plain mean. I refuse to change my Brembo's on the car to some smaller brakes just to run smaller rims so I can run a slick. The car probably will probably not run an amazing ET but I am hoping to see 150+ trap speeds. I'd like to do it on Ethanol. If it busts 150 mph, it is getting a parachute!

I can't wait to burn my first gallon of fuel I made myself. This is going to be an interesting year for so many projects.

I agree about the E85. It is amazing stuff and doesn't cost much, especially if you grow it yourself. Keep us posted.

ummm isnt destilling illegal?

remember the dukes of hazzard?

I hope the denatured part is true, if i remember correctly they will let you make beer, and mead and crap like that, but i am almost positive making distilled "spirits" is illegal.

I hope you can make it work, dont get into any trouble though.

A few Honda guys have been talking about mixing 15% C16 (or other high octane leaded race fuel) with Ethanol to create their own E85 for competition purposes as NHRA is now allowing the use of E85.

Dave, any predictions on about how much it is going to cost per gallon?

Yes, it is illegal to make "shine". You have to get a permit from the ATF, I already have the paperwork in order to submit.

Finding corn in Ohio of course is not a problem. The more of this you buy the more the expense is. I will already have to make quite a bit of it to re-coup my initial investment. It's just cool being able to do it.

After the first batch is run I will never have to worry about NOT having fuel to burn in a vehicle again. Neither will my kids.
