Max'd Out Stock vs. Non-BB 50 Trim

Fellahs

I need your help here way from sunny Iraq. I've been putting back some of this deployment money and I am definitely at the "Y" in the intersection as far as what path I'm going to take for my car.

As a daily driver with the occassional track visit, what would you all recommend as the path to take between a completely max'd out stock turbo versus a completely max'd out non-ball-bearing 50 Trim turbo?

I need some help fellahs because I've been banging my head against the wall about this decision.

See you all when I'm safely home!

for a daily driver, you'll lose a bit too much spool-up with a non-BB 50trim... not the best choice...

If you don't want to hand over the $$$ for a BB 50tim kit; consider upgrading to an EvoGreen or stock IX turbo...

An EvoGreen at like 28psi with the meth kit listed in your sig will be a nasty daily driver... Although you may give up a little top end to a 50trim, you'll have a little better spool-up with the Green, and a lot more low-end torque - qualities that make a great DD IMHO...

Hope this helps...

non BB 50 trims are such ****ty turbos, if those are your only options, go with a stocker maxed, if you can come up with another 400 dollars or so, get a BB 50 trim.

Pure-Thanks for your help over there!
Definitely the FP green! I don't know how anyone can say anything negative about it
I'm making as much hp & more torque then I have seen out of the 50 trims & can't wait to go at it with some of them soon to put the record straight!

You don't want a non-BB 50 trim. If you're going to go with it, get the BB version.

the t3/t04e non bb 50 trim turbo is so old and is a pos. that turbo is probably older than i am.

i dont understand why ppl use these turbos with the new garret GT turbos being preatty much superior to the old T seris turbos

Its really a question only you can answer - there are lots of things involved like $, lag, power band, noise, maintenance... If you have your heart set at getting a turbo without a stroker, I would also research Forced Performance Evo Green. It looses around 300rpm spool and will probably net you 40hp.

Brother, in reference to the 50 Trim, I see that you are talking about the AMS 50 Trim. I can't argue with you on that one especially when you ad either alky or meth to the equation. In my case I'm talking about a non-ball-bearing 50 Trim that I have to purchase a turbo manifold and a wastegate for in order for it to be complete.

I appreciate the feedback fellahs. I really do. In my case, I've already bought ONLY the non-ball-bearing turbo. I might be suffering a case of the cold shoulder because I know with the needed parts (turbo exhaust manifold, wastegate, etc.) needed to complete the set, I don't want to waste any money and I certainly don't want to have parts just laying around my garage. This is why I started to poll because like I said, "I'm at the Y in the intersection." I've compared both turbo set ups as far as price is concerned with the additional parts I know I'm going to need (not including what I've already paid for the non-BB 50 Trim) and the difference is only about $300. So like I said, it's either a max'd out stocker or a max'd out non-BB 50 Trim. I'm starting to lean towards the stocker. I appreciate the feedback all the way from Iraq!

Damn, posting from overseas, good luck with everything over there, and come home safe. If I were you, I would ebay that turbo for whatever you can get out of it and grab a BB 50 trim or an FP Green or Red.

Yeah, brother. Reading through the forums is one of the few things that I actually enjoy and can use to wind down during the day. I cannot tell you how "homely" it feels to reply back-n-forth and talk about what we all like to talk about...our EVOs! I've been buying car parts like crazy with Uncle Sam's money, of course. He pays us pretty good for keeping us over in this hell hole for 15 months away from family and friends. I understand what you're saying about putting the turbo on Ebay. I'll be willing to do that once I get home. Could you send me a PM about what would be an acceptable price considering that it is one of the older models out there and upgrades seem to be hitting the block pretty normally? Thanks.

Probably because people have been runnign faster times on the 50Trim over the 30R kits. You don't see AMS selling the 3076R anymore, Buschur dislikes it as well. The 50Trim is the ultimate street turbo, but yes I must stress that you get the BB unit. NON BB unit works well and makes power but the BB unit is that much better.

FYI a member just ran a high 10 @ 125MPH on his Non BB RNR 50 Trim kit, something to think about.

Brother, I've already bought the non-ball-bearing 50 Trim turbo. The only major parts that I have remaining to buy are the wastegate and the turbo exhaust manifold. I've always read about the 50 Trim being the ultimate compromise between street and drag racing. It does put a smile on my face knowing (reading) that someone on the forum ran such an impressive time on the same turbo that I have. Do you remember who it was? The difficulty of things is that if I max'd out the stock or continue to build the 50 Trim it would take me down two completely different routes and I don't want to have parts just laying around my garage. For example, going the 50 Trim build-up route requires the wastegate and the turbo exhaust manifold which are parts not needed for the stock turbo route. I'm familiar with the spool characteristics of the stock turbo and I guess if I knew what the spool characteristics of the non-ball-bearing 50 Trim was, it would help me out a great deal. If it's a difference of 200-400 RPM then I want to know that. I'm not knowledgeable enough in this area to do it myself and some help sure would be appreciated.

Other than that, I'm doing fine here in the desert. The days are still passing by pretty fast and soon enough my guys and I will be safely home.
