At WOT i can't hear it (exhaust or intake might be muffling the sound though).

I'll try putting it in neutral when i hear the sound like suggested. Problem is i'm always right about my gut feeling, i hope i'm wrong.

I justed my clutch and flywheel less then 2,000 miles ago. I changed all my fluids at the same time. T-case and rear diff was dilaqueen LSD.
I have the same noise. Same scenario too.

Once its starts making noise its probably already too late and has to be replaced with a new one.

Funny, searching "death whine" brings up very limited results, which don't bring up that particular post.

Thanks though, now I know what it sounds like at least

update:

now the whining has increased A LOT! so okay i'm ready to order a t-case from shep. just wondering could it be the front or rear diff that went out and not the diff? just wondering or is the whining just related to the t-case.

thanks

most likely the rear if u only hear it on decel...i had the exact same symptoms as u. took it to the dealer and they used a device to determine where the noise is coming from. it's so hard to tell if it's in the rear or the front, but they were able to determine it was the rear, plus they opened of the diff cover and saw all the wear on the ring and pinion gears. was still in warranty, had 15k miles...i've put about 3k miles with no more whining on 4th and 5th decel only.

so, the noise probably wont go away if ur plannin on sending ur tc to shep cuz the problem could be in the rear. have someone drive ur car or somone sit in the back. whenever i had passengers move from the front to the back they told me it was definitly louder back there. i vote for the rear as the problem because we have plenty of factors in common

-evo ix
-15k 16k
-whine @ 4th and 5th
-decel only

anyhow the due bill said the entire rear carrier assembly was replaced, which goes for about 3ooo with labor =X hopefully the dealers in ur area arn't dix. i'm from cali and went the hunington beach mitsu. great service! even had some mods they ignored

UPDATE:

background cliff notes: changed fluids at mitsu, asked for dilaqueen LSD to be used in T-case and diff. less then 2K miles later. i get a whine in my t-case.

Today i went to mitsu just to make sure one final time what oil was used. The mechanic that changed the oil was called to the reception, i asked him and he said "i used dilaqueen GL-4". I asked him "isn't that the same one used in the transmission?" Confidently, he replied "yeah"

Had a chat with the service manager and asked them to correct this as i was very clear i wanted dilaqueen LSD in my t-case. They said they will try to change it to LSD and see if the sound goes away.

I told him i doubt it but they said they need to try the small things first before they change anything major. Fair enough.

Driving a lancer ralliart now. I hope they change the t-case as i was just about to buy a stage 2 t-case from shep. we'll see

There is no fixing it with a fluid change once you get it. It happened to me as well. Good Luck to you... I hope that they replace it for you because its expensive.

i know there is no fixing to it! It is just a long procedure where they have to try everything before replacing it.

I don't mind waiting if it's gona get me a new t-case.

i was soo pissed when they said they used 'dilaqueen super multigear oil 75-85' in my t-case!!

don't know .. i don't have to pay for anything

i know they won't be able to fix it. Just wasting my time and theirs. They should just change the t-case right away.

yep ..

somehow they managed to blame me for abuse and bad clutch installment (installed aftermarket clutch outside dealer, used right oil there, i saw it myself, **** about these things)

they said even though they do admit putting the wrong oil in, it's not supposed to whine until another 10,000km's atleast! Whatever! so they said because it whined so early, it's not from them. B S i know !

ordered stage 2 acd t-case from shep, should be shipping it to me tomorrow. shipping is just crazy, $650 to Kuwait

i fought with them for 3 weeks, ended up just wasting my time, my car has been down for 4 weeks now, add another week for shipping and installation !
