Is my tcase dying?
06 JDM 6speed Evo
I did a lot of searching on tcase whines and i think my tcase is on it's way out. I've listened to a video that someone made by that sound i have is no where near that loud.
I have a low pitched howl or whine cruising speed at 4th of 5th gear. The sound does NOT increase upon acceleration (maybe it does but i can not hear it). In addition, the sound is there upon in gear deceleration from 4th of 5th gear.
My question is, the people who have had the death whine, does it start low pitched and then increase over time (after a week or a certain persiod of time) ? or does it occur all of a sudden?
thanks

Unfortunately, the noise increases with time.. mostly on 4th and 5th gears (seems u dont have 6gear?).. yes it is noticeable on decelaration..
So it seems you have all the symptoms, yes..

I have 6th gear. just notice it more on 4th and 5th.
But i don't notice it when accelerating hard, only cruising speeds at 60/m/h on 5th
damn.. how much time do i have left before it gets unbearable?

wish you the best, but it seems you have the noticeable signs and symptoms of a burnt up T-Case.. taking it out now and rebuilding is a respectable fix, but upgrading now and getting a new and improved one seems to be more suitable.. only due to the fact that you have a IX and without knowing how many miles you have driven and how hard you drive seems to me you need a new upgraded one ASAP...
2006 IX around 16K miles it.
I just noticed that the same howling/whining noise is there when i decelerate from 60m/h all the way to 30m/h (in 4th or 5th gear)
isn't the death whine not supposed to be there on deceleration and only acceleration?

Symptoms may differ. Some cases you will only hear it after a certain speed. Some cases it happens at lower speeds and upon deceleration. Eventually it will happen all the time at all speeds upon acceleration AND decceleration.
Before you get too freaked out about the T-Case your car will always make a slight whining noise, that is just how the car is. It even gets louder when you decelerate.
The first question you need to answer is, have you upgraded your motor mounts, if so which ones. By upgrading them you are going to increase the noise you hear from your engine.
Your TC may not be failing, you just may be hearing normal engine noises. Just my $.02

Other common factors of increased engine noise:
Open element air filter
Recent oil change to something your car does not like (5w20 for example)
Boost/Vacuum leak (Remember a leak during boost could also leak during vacuum)
Damaged Downpipe gasket
***There are more, so before you pull your TC I would be certain it's not that***

it sounds to me like your overly evaluating the noises in your car. my car makes all kinds of drivetrain noise. deceleration noise is noticeable in every gear simply because the gears mesh and will make noise, i have a engine damper and front poly motor mount, and our cars are poorly sound deadened.
the transfercase deathwhine is without a doubt unmistakable. if you only hear it in a few spots, its not the death whine. the death whine is in every gear at every speed, regardless of accelerating or decelerating. the transfercase is spinning, it is making the death whine noise. the faster it is spinning (i.e. the faster you are going), the louder it gets. it gets to the point where all you can hear is the whining noise at 80 mph... even over the wind noise, and TBE noise.
a good way to check, accelerate to 80, and put the car in neutral. do you hear any whining? by doing that you eliminate any gear noises in the transmission which are pretty loud, yet the transfer case will still be spinning.
also, in both cases of transfer cases i've replaced in customers cars, it was a sudden thing. the cars went from normal, to insanely loud in a matter of a few days.

heh
The "death whine" is without a doubt unmistakenable. Your hear your altanator upon decel. Trust me. My friend baught a used evo with the death whine. I always thought I had it. Once you hear it. You know what it is. Stop being perinoid. You will know once you hear it. And your not hearing it.

I agree with everyone that states you dont have the death whine. I had it in my car about 2 days ago (got my tc replaced) and it sounds like your tires are really shot, you are in a jet. Trust me it will be deffinately noticible. Have you had your TC, tranny, rear diff serviced anytime recently?
update:
just came back from a long drive out, and i think i'm more definive about the sound now - it comes on at 60m\h in 4th/5th/6th gear. You can hear it clearly (though not very loud, just noticable) when applying slight throttle.
At WOT i can't hear it (exhaust or intake might be muffling the sound though).
I'll try putting it in neutral when i hear the sound like suggested. Problem is i'm always right about my gut feeling, i hope i'm wrong.
I justed my clutch and flywheel less then 2,000 miles ago. I changed all my fluids at the same time. T-case and rear diff was dilaqueen LSD.
