Swapping out final gear...

Im looking into swapping out the final gear to a higher gear in my ix. What's involve? is it as simple as taking out the rear diff? Any DIY guide out there? I'd searched. No luck.

Contact Shep or TRE.

Higher? Mean lower? OE is 4.56 or about. Or are you talking 5th gear in the trans?

Yes i'm looking for < OE (4.56). I'm thinking about 4.11 or maybe higher. Im not sure if my terminology is correct.. final gear=differential gear?

You are looking for higher top speed and slower accel (dep. on power levels) then (lower gear). Both aforementioned shops can help you there. Yes, you are talking about the final gear. Im picking up what you are putting down now.

http://www.teamrip.com/GENUINE_FACTORY_EVO_PARTS.html
SPEED OF EACH GEAR:

Engine RPM = 7500

4.53 oem final drive - 4.11 HKS final drive - 3.73 TRE final drive

1st = 40 - 47 - 50mph

2nd = 64 -70 - 77mph

3rd= 89 - 97 - 106mph

4th = 122 - 132 - 145mph

5th = 174 - 190 - 210mph

IMO, the swap only makes sense during a tranny rebuild, considering you have to go through all of the same labor.

You would have to change the gear in the trans and in the rear diff right?

The final drive is before the center diff, so the front and rear diffs are still matching ratios. No other changes required.

The 4.11 set should make the EVO more like a DSM. I personally like the shorter gearing in the EVO, but I can see it being too short for a stroked car with more torque. Even with the DSMs 4.10 gearing (IIRC) first was too short with a stroker, IMO.

my trans & TC is at sheps now. I'm thinking about upgrading the final drive to either 4.11 or 3.73 for more gear in 4th while drag racing. Just waiting for them to actually get to my stuff so I can get an estimate.

What formula are you guys using to figure speeds in respective gears? I've used a few different ones, but I can't seem to match the stock setup.

I've read the Evo IX should hit it's 7k redline @ 106.9 in 4th gear on the stock 235/45-17 (25.3) tires.
.... and 114.5 @ 7500 in 4th.

IX 4th gear is - 1.029
VIII & IX Final Drive - 4.529
Is that with the 6spd? That doesn't seem accurate with a 5spd.
