I once took a car into a local ford dealer (under warranty) becuase the alternator was going bad, charge light was comming on at around 5,500 rpm. The service advisor said "well you shouldn't be reving it that high anyway" I said "dude, you know damn good and well the the redline on that car is 6500 rpm, based on that I should be able to drive all day long at 6400 rpm without any problems so don't even try to start that crap" He shut up and finished the paperwork

F'ing tools..... I swear they will try and get away with anyting they can. Do they get paid some discount for warranty work... or is being a tool required to work in a dealers service department

The shifter is cable driven so unless there is some secret mechanical advantage on the cable, pulling to the left won't matter and the shift knob, I don't get.

well... at the risk of being flamed... here we go.

i am currently driving a mildly modified HYUNDAI.
the motor/transmission combo in my car, also known as the "beta" motor
was cross engineered from the 4g63 because for several years hyundai was
sort of an understudy of mitsubishi, infact between the years of 93-96 the 4g63 was a direct drop into the elantra/tiburon.

any how, to cut to the chase... myself and several other members of the hyundai community (yes we have a "community") have had very similar problems with the 1-2 shift as well as occasional grinds shifting from neutral to reverse (even from a dead stop). we've tried synchro-shift also and just like you, we found very little improvement with it. but there was an additive that someone used, and ill have to find the post and post the info here later, that did improve the 1-2 shift noticeably.

several speculated it could be something from the manufacturer like too much slack in the cables, or bad gear spacing inside the transmission... until i bought my clutch. i got a K.O.R.E. Motorsports stage3 four puck carbonic clutch with a SPEC pressure plate, i havent ground a gear since the install, and god knows ive tried.

i know they may not be exactly the same anymore, infact im sure of it, but i do know that the general designs and most of the dimensions are still almost identical between my motor/transmission and yours. so i hope this helped a little bit. and i apologize for the long post.

Could be that the SPEC pressure plate is sprung higher and doing a better job of releasing the clutch disk and smoother shifts....

Have any of the tuners or private owners who have replaced the clutch experiencing any grinds? Maybe some of these problems could be traced back to the stock clutch.

This seems to be a common problem in mistu trannies period. I own a 01 Dodge Stratus R/T which uses the 6g72 3.0L v6 engine found in the eclipses and the 5spd matching transmission.

This has been a topic for us since the eclipses came out. Many users have attemped combinations of BG or redline and there is even a mixture called the "scot gray mix" which is 2 parts redline and 1 part bg ii.

I personally have used 3 quarts of bg syncroshift ii in my car and I did notice that it helped out the 1 2 shifts alot and made shifts seem more fluid. I do still grind 2nd once in a while on hard boosting shifts but I'm going to see if the spec stage 3 clutch I have on order will help w/ that (turbo install = bye bye clutch! heh).

Same here...out of habit, I pull the shifter to the left for the 1-2 shift...no grinding, no problems...

I've got 2400 miles on my car and only missed 3rd one time driving it hard.....It grinded and wouldn't allow me to shift into it.....So I had to back it out into neutral and then put it back into 3rd.....Other than that, I've never grinded my gears.......

But it does seem as though our gears doesn't shift too smoothly..

sorry if this is a stupid ? but this is my first mannual car. Are you supposed to be able to shift into 1st while moving, because i can never get it in no matter how far i press the clutch.

I don't drive an Evo (yet) but I learned to drive in a stick car when I was 16. You can shift into 1st while moving, but only while moving slowly (less than 15 mph or so) in every stick car I've ever driven. This prevents you from shifting into 1st at 60 mph, releasing the clutch and sliding out of control.

Maybe that will help. Sounds normal, don't bother taking it in unless you can't shift into first while under 15-20 mph.

Enjoy your sweet ride!

Edit: Ah I see it's not an evo, sorry, but what I said still goes.
And still enjoy your sweet ride!

You guys who have to push the shifter to the left to get in gear, try adjusting your cables. You have 2 cables one that moves with the side to side shifter movement and one for up and down. If the shifter cables are anything like the DSM shifter, do this:

Hope that helps
