pulled the head, got a question bout the cyl. walls
Alright I got an 03 with 42k on it. I am doing a TTrix 50trim kit but I wanted to pull the head to do the HG and ARP head studs. Well the head just came off about an hour ago and I couldnt help but notice the cyl walls on all 4 it looks like the wall is mirrored on front side(facing the front end of the car) and on the backside (facing the rear end of the car). its not the entire wall but it has me conserned. Is it normal to see the wall shine? or even mirrored? Ill get pics up ASAP I took a few but need to find the usb cable for it
Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance

If the walls are mirrored in spots, this indicates there has been piston skirt scuffing. This usually indicates excessive heat or, less likely, a geometry problem due to unusual wear or a fastener that is not in spec.
I'm not sure what a compression test is going to determine. This issue probably won't affect it.
I've seen evidence of minor scuffing in several EVO engines, so it may very well be common. What would concern me is if I noticed one cylinder that appeared much different than the others. Take photos.

on the power stroke the piston puts a lot of force into the cylinder wall wich can cause what you are describing.
since the piston is only under load on the power stroke & only when the piston is decending in the bore it is not unusual to see more wear on the piston & cyl wall on the loaded side than the unloaded side
ive rebuilt a few older race engines & it was not uncommon to see the loaded side of the piston & cyl wall polished to a mirror like shine, while the opposite side of the cylinder wall still had cross-hatch marks visible, usually the motor would still show good compression & power, so i wouldnt say its anything to be concerned about in your case

well I cant even do a compression check the car is in peices now. Ill have pics up today if I can can get them on my computer. all 4 cyls wall look pretty much the same one is a little more shiney than the other 3 but generally they are pretty much ll the same looking front side and back side other than that the rest of the cyl wall still shows the cross marks.

so oday we turned the crank so it is at TDC and the mirroring goes the legnth of the cyl on all 4 and gets more mirrored toward the middle of each cyl. If that helps any and I am still working on getting the pics emailed to me

The worry I have is if there is contact with the walls and the rings on the stock turbo then when I run the 50trim and make around 400-415hp it may get worse, unless what I am seeing is a normal thing
Some where is fairly normal for these engines (or so I'm told), but what raised a question for me was the fact that one was wearing noticeably faster.
The wear area will be most pronounced at mid stroke, simply because this is where sidewall loading is at its highest.

mid stroke is more pronounced all are pretty much the same amount of wear on each maybe slight differences.
