that is funny because I know that both the sti and mazdaspeed3 have forged rods and week pistons, so the evo is backwards or maybe they are?.

the evo8 and 9 pistons are NOT forged. they are definately cast. dont believe some stupid article. the factory pistons run .0015 pistons to wall clearance. no way on earth can you run that clearance on forged pistons. they swell way to much under boost.

They sure looked cast when I was looking at a set. They looked downright feeble when compared to a forged aftermarket set.

The OEM pistons are designed to be....OEM pistons! In other words, they must be quiet, inexpensive to manufacture, efficient, and of hold up to whatever a standard engine (and then some) can throw at it. A cast OEM piston can be heat treated and made extremely hard. This may make the piston look strong by numbers, but also very hard and non-ductile. You should have no problems as long as your tuning is good. A little detonation and that hard piston can fail, usually on the second ring land or crown.

If you have any doubts, just upgrade.

Is 0.0025" piston to wall clearance enough for a forged pistons?

What is the forged piston (example, wiseco) recommended spec for piston to wall clearance before getting excessive piston slap and premature wear?

Anyone got any experience with JE pistons or wiesco? Does it interfere with the stock knock control system?

consevatively, he recommends to upgrade stock rods for 500hp (mainly bigger turbos than 20G variants such as hks 3037) and fully forged engine after that. yes you can put a larger turbo on stock internals, but what is the point of babying it after installing a larger turbo and loosing a ton of spool

the more I ride in stroked big tubo cars, the more I like the car on the stock turbo - with that much power, the car becomes a straight line car unless you are very talented driver with brass *****
Its the Rods which cause the failure...and they are not good up to 500.....
Anything above 450+ its your luck thats keep it....
And as soon as it runs out BOOM!

As for the stock pistons i think they are forged...
And if you really want to compare then compare stock rods with any other aftermarket rods...

I said that stock pistons are fine upto around 500hp.

I also suggested to upgrade stock rods for 500hp (mainly bigger turbos than 20G variants such as hks 3037)

I agree on 450+ 20G turbos basically make upto 460hp on a safe pump tune and anything bigger would be better with upgraded rods...
