Question Is my clutch gone? [Tcase whining]

I was driving a little bit hard my car. I took a corner fast, 2nd gear @ 4500rpm, hit the gas until 7000rpm then 3rd and I heard a big metal to metal noise, like a whiiiiiiiiiiiiii (I hope you like the sound of the noise )
I released the throttle immediately to avoid breaking anything else so I'm not really able to say if the car was pushing hard or not

I stopped the car to check everything, it was smelling burned but not sure it was clutch smell.

I've done some pulls in 2nd, 3rd from 3000rpm to 6500rpm afterwards to reproduce the sound with no success.

The car drives fine otherwise, it still pulls hard. I have no slippage of the clutch.

My car is an 03 with 34000 mi, stock clutch and WT/BR package (TBE, MBC, DV, FP and flash) for 6000 miles.

Do you think my clutch needs to be replaced?
Can it be my transfert case? Please tell me no!!!

I've never lauched the Evo, no autoX, no track day.

Please advice

To find out if its done floor it in 5th gear from like 2-3k rpm's. If your rpms climb and you dont go anywhere then the clutch is slipping.

When clutches go bad they go bad pretty fast. It will get exponentially worse in a short amount of time if it's the clutch. That noise you described makes it sound like it may be something else though.

sounds like you hit the rev limiter. Are you sure your RPMs were not higher?>

Could it be the front differential??? I was in an 03 evo and when turning slow it made a horrible sound and vibrate bad, Once the fluid was changed it went away.

I come back from a test road. I was mean with her

The clutch never slipped during the test. I've been from 55mph to 90 in 5th gear, no problem.
I have a sound like a whistling. It's here for 2 weeks, it was small and it increased each time I touched the gas and it decreased each time I let the gas pedal alone. I thought it was the Fuel pump so I did not really pay attention since today.

After the test, the noise is bigger and it varies with the speed of the car. With the clutch pedal to the floor on the highway the sound is still here. So it cannot be the fuel pump (because at idle I can hear it and it's not this sound) neither the clutch. So it's in between ==> TC?!?!

This sound (the unfamous whinning sound???) becomes a grinding sound at low speed (<5mph).

So what's next?
I believe I should contact TRE or Shep for quote Lucky me I'm in Michigan close to those 2 shops.
I wanted to change the clutch which might go soon. Should I change it in the process even if it still ok?
What are your advice?

How many miles can I do with this problem? It's my DD I'm doing 20 miles a day.

BTW, thank you all for your answers

To kreionic, I've hitten the limiter in the past, it was not that

To lotsOboost, I've done the 30,000 mi service check (at Mitsu), all fluids were changed 2 month ago. The car is shaking a little bit at high speed since the check, I think it's more a issue with the balance of the wheels (which were rotated) but you may be correct. How to check the diff, then?
Should I try to turn and check if the noise get worse? If this noise happens on highway, the front diff should not make noise since all wheel are spinning at the same speed, shouldn't it?

Update to everyone

I brought it to the dealer, they say the Tcase is shot. They asked me $3950 total to fix the car Even the manager told me this price was outrageous. We discussed and he agrees with me: try to have it rebuilt.

After removal of the Tcase, a miEvo member ( ) proposed me to inspect it with me. There is no failure inside the Tcase, just some wear, no metal chips inside the fluid. the front diff was not so great, there was some metal in the fluid (which is no big deal because I'll change it)

Anyway, the Tcase is on its way to Shep for a stage 2 rebuild

Thanks guys for your comments
