5-speed vs. 6-speed

I've been checking out '06 Evo IX for a little while but have yet to pull the trigger. From cost stand point IX SE seems to be the best choice but it comes in a 5-speed tranny. MR offers 6-speed but also for a lot more money. What do you guys think? What are the pros and cons of 5-spd. vs. 6-spd.? I am particularly interested to learn more about difference in drivability. Any reliability issues to be concerned with?

There's already lots of threads talking about 5spd vs 6spd with TONS of information within them. Please read them before posting a new thread asking the same questions.

The 6 speed is nice, I like it. the only issue is if you might road race a 6 speed in an extended type time session. The Tanny gets too hot and needs a tranny cooler other than that, no issues at all between the 2. I personally enjoy that extra gear, but others will tell you otherwise. I purchased the MR for other reasons, the bilstein shocks, the Aluminum Body panels, and because the MR edition is a limited run, not that many 06 MR's were wrought into this year. I also think the X's will not live up to the Evo name so I decided to go ahead and get what was my dream car.....and I luv it and am slowly learning about it and am modding it to my liking...hope this helps. but you can't go wrong with any EVO ..just dont buy a used one

6 speed pulls harder on the butt dyno but isn't as good for big power because of smaller gear surfaces. Get the MR for the options aside from the 6 speed as he said.

I'd say get either the plain ol' GSR or the SE. Most people on here buy their Evos and get to work right away modding them. They respond so well to basic mods that, IMHO, I couldn't justify spending the extra cash on an MR or even an SE.

$1500 worth of mods will make these cars into beasts...

Oh yeah, and search regarding the 5-spd vs 6-spd debate - It's been beaten to death and back again...

It's been discussed many, many times.

Bottom line, the 6spd is just fine if you dont race your car.

If you race, track or drag, the 5spd is better.

1st, 2nd, 3rd are actualy thicker in the 6spd than in the 5spd. 4th gear is thinner and the one you will eventually have problems with, if you beat on it.

My advice, get the GSR SE and never look back..

6 speed is just fine for drag racing...You shift into 5th before the finish line, but the Tranny can handle it just fine.

5-spd. vs. 6-spd.

Thanks for all the replies. Your guys are extremely helpful.

I am not much of a drag racer but I will likely track this car occasionally. Sounds like either 5-spd. or 6-spd. will suffice my "performance requirement" admirably. It will be my daily car though. But looks like price will most likely be the determining factor. I will do some more digging into earlier threads. Thanks again.

This tells me you still haven't searched... I guess you haven't found my experiences with the 6spd yet.

It's a toss up depends on what type of driving you do and what type of car you making.

The 6 speed is JUNK....It was a marketing gimmick by Mitsu to compete with the STi that had a 6 speed standard. Mitsu outsourced the 6 speed design and construction to Aisin and they did a bad job. 4th, 5th and 6th gears are small and cannot handle the loads placed on them on the track.

Do a search as Warr has suggested. I know of at least 4 people who have broken their 6 speed on the track.

Get the 5 speed and be safe.
