there are too many 06 MR out there, 05 MR was the year where they only brought less than 2000 into the country. 06 MR is too easy to find.

No one shifts to 6th when drag racing, and it's only 5 max shifts anyway. Only the VIII 5spd is really a benefit for drag racing, since the IX 5spd has such a short 4th gear.

What about the 5spd with the 4.11 gears wouldn't that be ideal for cars with higher hp levels. My SE seems geared too short and I imagine with 100 more hp that will only make it feel even shorter.

It could be the solution, but I haven't seen the results of someone doing it on a IX yet.

^So for drag 5spd's better, and for the track 6spd's are better correct?

The 6-speed is fine. Everyone on this forum says stupid stuff because a few people broke their 6-speeds who beat the crap out of them on multiple track days without letting them cool off properly or having a diff-cooler and I know Warrtalon said he would "powershift" every gear when drag racing. I've heard that the worst thing you can do to ANY Evo tranny is powershift it. Its better to push the clutch to the floor and learn how to shift fast and smooth. When I first got my car I was amazed at how high the clutch engages on the pedal. Test drive both models and see which tranny you like more. I personally love them both. They definitely feel different, the 6-speed feels like their is nothing there when you shift and is incredibly smooth and the 5-speed has much more feel and a gangster whining sound.

I could be wrong but I don't believe that the 06 5spd and 6spd have identical 1-4. I have raced many of my friends with IX 5spds and even with much less power I still go through the gears faster (even though I'm losing).

Evo IX MR, you're definitely off. My 6spd didn't go out from powershifting. Don't even get me started on you telling me to learn how to shift fast without lifting. I only powershift at the drag strip, and I'd love to see you try to shift as fast without lifting. Also, I do _not_ powershift or even speed shift when road racing. I went 2 years of racing the car hard in autox and drag without damaging anything. Then, I started road racing more often, and that's when I lost 4th gear. I didn't lose it during shift, I did not fail to let my trans "cool off properly" (wtf does that mean?), and since when are we required to have a diff cooler? My 4th gear went out because it was small and weak like every other 4th gear, and it did so while accelerating in 4th normally in 55* degree weather on my 2nd lap of a 20-min session after an hour of cooldown. If you don't take my word for it, then take the word of Shep and Jon Ripple (TRE). 4-6 are tiny gears with tiny teeth. Shep described the size of the teeth on my busted 4th gear as being good enough for an N/A Civic.

Now, if you take Razorlab's example, he doesn't drag race and does not powershift, yet his 6spd blew up, too. There are more examples, and most of them are 4th gear, because of the reasons I've stated.

As for the 1-4 gearing, yes, the IX 5spd is ALMOST IDENTICAL to the MR. 4th gear goes about 1mph further in the IX, but that's it. The VIII 5spd has a much taller 4th gear.

PS. The clutch only engages as high as you want it. Not every Evo engages high - it engages where you set it. It's easy to change.

I know for sure there are bunch more 5-speed owner who broke their 5-speed tranny while doing tracking event then 6-speed. Let face it, all Mitsu tranny are ****ty anyway. That is why most of you have the builted Shep tranny in your evo and not the oem 5-speed replacement from the mitsu dealership.

BTW I have never track or drag my evo MR yet so I wont be looking for a Shep tranny anytime soon. But if I did broke, it dont matter what tranny I have 5 or 6-speed when it broke, then it's broke.... it must of mean I did too many crazy lauches, high speed driving and cornering at the track.

Not sure where you got that info, Wicked, but that's not true. It is not common for 5spds trannies to blow up on the track (road course). There are other issues with synchros and maybe 1st gear (launching), but no problem on the road course. You haven't seen AMS blow theirs up on their Time Attack cars. Also, yes Shep builds our trannies, but it's still an OEM tranny. Not sure what you meant by that. He just does the TSBs and beefs up a few things, but it's not a complete overhaul
